Sumitomo Metal Mining has started mass production of wafers for next-generation power semiconductors, which are expected to expand in demand for electric vehicles (EVs). The material is silicon carbide. Compared with ordinary silicon-based semiconductors, the new generation of power semiconductors can greatly reduce power loss.
It is expected to achieve a monthly output of 10,000 pieces in 2025. Sumitomo Metal Mining strives to use the new wafers for home appliances and other products first, and it is expected to be equipped with electric vehicles after FY 2025.
