AkzoNobel invests 90 million euros in specialty chemicals, breaks ground on new organic peroxide production site in China

On July 5, AkzoNobel's new organic peroxides production base under Specialty Chemicals broke ground in Tianjin, China. The production base will be equipped with the most advanced production technology. Organic peroxides are an essential raw material in the manufacture of a variety of polymers, including polyvinyl chloride and thermosetting resins. 

In response to the Chinese government's call for optimizing urban planning and upgrading the chemical industry, AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals will transfer its existing Tianjin plant's organic peroxide production capacity to a new production base in the Tianjin Nangang Industrial Zone. The new Tianjin production base, which is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2020, will expand its production capacity by 30% -70% according to the construction of production lines to meet the development needs of the market and customers.

"The market demand for organic peroxides is still growing in Asia and globally," said Li Zhiping, AkzoNobel ’s Polymer Chemicals Asia Sales Director. According to Li Zhiping, in China, the organic peroxide market is growing at a rate of 5%-6% per year, which is much higher than the rest of the world. "We will continue to expand production capacity to meet market demand." Li Zhiping mentioned.

Johan Landfors, member of AkzoNobel's specialty chemicals council responsible for polymer chemicals, said that the company will work to improve sustainable operations in accordance with the strict requirements of the Chinese government. "We will use the most advanced production technology to minimize wastewater discharge. The new production site will also simplify production processes, reduce water and energy consumption, and reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions," Landfors said.
