ArcelorMittal launched the Fortiform 980 Extragal (-GI) steel grade. This is a new advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) that can be used in the automotive industry.

With the advent of second-generation steel, bodywork engineers are subject to certain limitations when using high-strength steel to manufacture components that absorb energy or have complex structures. With Fortiform steel, this limitation can be eliminated. Because these steels have high corrosion resistance and excellent surface quality, Extraragal coating products can be used in many automotive applications, including exposed and non-exposed parts.

Chief Research Engineer Hassan Ghassemi-Armaki said: "Compared to the second-generation AHSS, the new Fortiform 980 Extragal steel (-GI) can be used for cold stamping, and it has higher strength, stronger formability and ductility, expanding AHSS in the body Applications in the design field. This is a key advantage because automakers are under pressure to further reduce vehicle weight as part of their strategy to improve fuel economy. "

Global R & D senior engineer Qaiser Khan said: "Fortiform 980 Extragal has superior performance and can reduce weight by up to 20% compared to traditional AHSS steel. At the same time, it can meet increasingly stringent collision and safety requirements. A series of vehicle structural components that may be affected, including front and rear rails. "

Fortiform 980 Extragal steel is compatible with the welding systems currently used in industry. The emergence of this kind of steel effectively relieves some typical problems of high-strength AHSS steel, such as liquid metal embrittlement and optimal welding strength. ArcelorMittal studies four types of welding: resistance spot welding, laser welding, MIG brazing and gas-shielded metal arc welding to avoid surface cracks in critical areas. Currently, Fortiform 980 Extragal is only available in North America and will soon be launched in the European market.
