BASF announces force majeure on compostable bioflex plastics ecoflex® and ecovio®

On October 13, 2017, a technical defect was detected in the BASF Ludwigshafen ecoflex device, which has been discontinued for maintenance. In addition to ecoflex®, the unit also produces ecovio®, both of which are BASF's versatile compostable bio-based plastics.

For this reason, BASF has declared force majeure between ecoflex and ecovio. BASF is actively repairing technical flaws, and the device is expected to stop for at least three weeks.

This technical defect appeared in the thermal cycle system of the plant, causing a small amount of Marlotherm SH heat transfer oil to flow into the production line. This thermal oil is biodegradable. The technical and processing properties of the ecoflex and ecovio products are unaffected and remain biodegradable.

According to preliminary estimates, BASF does not expect any health risks in the application of related products (such as agricultural mulch, garbage bags or plastic bags and coffee capsules). However, for certain product applications, such as thin plastic bags used to transport fruits and vegetables, approvals (licenses) for food-contact applications are required, and these products do not currently meet the requirements.

BASF is actively maintaining close communication with affected customers and recalling related products. The total amount of affected products is about 1,500 tons, and BASF is opening a service hotline for customers in downstream industries.
