BASF partners with Chinese lightweight materials, PU-honeycomb panel auto parts manufacturer to push polyurethane surface car trunk floor Hay:Q05SZGL

Chinese innovation company SZGL Light Automotive Components has introduced an easy-to-clean car trunk surface covering. The floor of the trunk of the car uses polyurethane honeycomb board technology and is covered with BASF's Elastoskin® polyurethane surface. Compared with the traditional non-woven surface, the newly developed product is easier to clean, provides a great degree of design freedom, and is less prone to aging and does not emit harmful gases.

Honeycomb structures have been used on trunk lids, roof linings, and truck driver's cab roofs. The honeycomb paperboard sealed by two fiberglass mats is foamed and pressed by Elastoflex®E semi-rigid polyurethane foam, so that the paperboard can reduce the weight by 20-30% while maintaining the same strength and stiffness.

In cooperation with SZGL, BASF has for the first time applied the Elastoskin® polyurethane skin to the B-side of the trunk floor of a car. The polyurethane surface means that it is easy to remove floor dirt and keep the luggage clean. The non-woven surface requires an additional process to bond it to the trunk floor, but the Elastoskin® polyurethane skin can be placed directly on it. This technology opens up new possibilities for the design and concept of luggage flooring, while retaining excellent mechanical properties while reducing emissions and odors. Elastoskin® polyurethane is comfortable to the touch, easy to release from the mold, highly resistant to aging, and reproducible.

Andy Postlethwaite, senior vice president of Asia Pacific for BASF Performance Materials, said: "For many years, BASF has been working to achieve weight reduction in the automotive industry through cellular technology. The innovative materials developed this time bring new possibilities for automotive interior components . "

The initial laboratory testing and development was completed at BASF's Lemförde, Germany plant. Honeycomb modules with Elastoskin® polyurethane skins will be produced by SZGL in Suzhou, China. The final finished components will be shipped to global car manufacturers and suppliers.

PU-Honeycomb Panel Technology

As a medium-sized group company, in order to reach the top level in the industry, Greenlight focuses on a special technology called PU-honeycomb, which uses a sandwich structure composed of the following materials:

Lightweight core material (paper core, aluminum core, etc.)

Reinforcement layer: glass fiber, carbon fiber, Kevlar

Double-layer spray PU

Composite decorative layer if needed: carpet, non-woven fabric, knitted fabric, TPO, TPU, PVC, coating, etc.

According to technical parameters and requirements, the core material can be paper (honeycomb / corrugated paper). Aluminum, reinforced with various fibers。
