BASF successfully develops a new specialty polyamide, Ultramid® Deep Gloss, for high-gloss automotive interiors

October 17, 2017-BASF has recently developed a new specialty polyamide, Ultramid® Deep Gloss, which combines the chemical resistance of semi-crystalline polyamides with the high gloss and depth of field of amorphous plastics. Requires high-gloss, high-resistance automotive interior parts without additional spraying steps. The material's performance is very balanced: high gloss, strong scratch resistance, excellent chemical resistance and UV resistance. The structure of Ultramid Deep Gloss can truly restore various details and achieve a strong contrast between light and shadow. During the development process, BASF also considered the strict requirements of the automotive industry on VOC emissions and odors in vehicles. This specialty polyamide is currently available worldwide.

Maintains beautiful appearance and superior performance in harsh environments

Thanks to its good gloss, amorphous amorphous plastics are widely used in various daily necessities. As people's requirements for maintaining surface properties for a long period of time become higher and higher, the scratch resistance and friction resistance of materials often cannot meet the needs, so surface chemical spraying has to be performed. The semi-crystalline polyamide has excellent chemical resistance, but the gloss and scratch resistance are unsatisfactory. It also cannot meet the requirements of the best surface quality for the application. Ultramid Deep Gloss's polymer materials and additives achieve an ideal balance, which not only has excellent gloss and depth of field, but also meets the requirements to maintain high-quality surfaces under continuous use conditions, such as excellent scratch resistance and UV resistance . Compared to other spray-free high-gloss materials, Ultramid Deep Gloss's friction resistance is impressive. In terms of processing, this new BASF polyamide has great potential: it can be injection molded without the use of extremely cold and hot molds, and it does not require surface spraying.

Superior materials power innovative concepts

Automotive interiors have a huge demand for black piano surfaces. The industry expects the proportion of high-quality, semi-functional surfaces to continue to grow. Following autonomous driving, new operating concepts are also driving this trend. Thanks to its balanced performance characteristics, Ultramid Deep Gloss offers designers new opportunities to use unconventional textures such as ripples, waves, hammers, lines and rhombuses. In addition, the surface structure can be integrated with tactile design elements and combined with appropriate sensor technology to achieve an integrated, functional design.

Ultramid Deep Gloss provides an ideal material for decorative elements, such as decorative panels around the edges of displays and luminaires. Functional components such as interior storage racks, door inlays, center consoles, and vents can also benefit from the material's high gloss and chemical resistance. In addition to piano black, Ultramid Deep Gloss can also be used to achieve other high-end colors, such as porcelain white, ivory or earthy. The Ultramid Deep Gloss was originally developed to meet automotive interior requirements, but it can also be used to make consumer products with similar requirements.
