BASF’s Chimassorb light stabilizer improves durability of TPO roofing membranes in China

December 6, 2018-Suzhou Waterproof Research Institute of China Building Materials Research Institute (Suzhou Waterproof Research Institute for short) is China's leading waterproof material research center. The research institute has recently included BASF ’s Chimassorb® light stabilizer in thermoplastics. Polyolefin (TPO) roof waterproofing membrane standard scheme. As an alternative to asphalt coils, TPO roofing waterproofing membranes are usually laid on flat roofs to protect buildings from damage caused by heavy rain.

TPO roof waterproofing membranes are becoming more and more popular for their excellent performance and ease of installation. However, like all polymers, TPO degrades prematurely when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and high temperatures, causing small cracks, loss of tensile strength, and elongation at break, which reduces wind resistance. The use of light stabilizers can alleviate this problem. Ultraviolet light stabilizers such as Chimassorb can play a particularly important role because they provide weather resistance and long-lasting strength, thereby increasing roof durability. Such stabilizers also need to be compatible and work with all other formulated ingredients.

Hermann Althoff, Global Senior Vice President, Performance Chemicals, BASF, Asia Pacific, said: "Light stabilizers are essential for TPO roofing membrane manufacturers, because the life of a roofing membrane depends heavily on Whether a suitable UV light stabilizer is used. Our stabilizer solution can help extend the life of the product and help reduce the impact of the product on the environment compared to less durable products. The extended product life also Helps save resources and reduce the pressure on waste disposal. "

TPO roofing membranes are easy to recycle because they can be melted, purified and re-extruded. Therefore, the old TPO waterproof membrane can be recycled to make a new TPO waterproof membrane.

Mr. Wang Wenbin, R & D Manager of Suzhou Waterproof Research Institute, said: "Because TPO roof waterproofing membranes need to withstand the impact of severe weather on buildings, any degradation will cause water leakage and damage. The use of Chimassorb-based stabilizer technology can ensure the resistance of polymers UV capability to provide customers with more durable products. "

BASF's series of light stabilizers include: UV absorbers that protect polymers from degradation by UV radiation, and hindered amine light stabilizers that remove free radical intermediates formed during photooxidation.
