Cadmium Telluride Crystal Boost Siemens Semiconductor Detector Photon Counting CT Core Technology

On November 5, 2021, at the 4th International Fair opened in Shanghai, Siemens Medical's first globally approved FDA semiconductor detector photon counting CT technology completed its global synchronized debut in China.

The semiconductor detector made of new material cadmium telluride crystal can directly read every X photon by photon counting, which can restore the essence of the material to the greatest extent.

Siemens Medical is the only enterprise in the industry that can produce such semiconductor detectors, and has designed a complete process for preparing cadmium telluride crystals.

In nature, it takes three million years for cadmium telluride to be generated, and it only takes three months for pure crystals to grow in the detector laboratory of Siemens Medical.

Amorphous selenium, cadmium telluride (CdTe), cadmium zinc telluride (CdZnTe, CZT) and cadmium selenide (CdSe) are all direct detection materials. They have high atomic number, large X-ray absorption coefficient and high carrier mobility, and are expected to be widely used in X-ray detection technology.

The thickness of these materials usually only needs millimeter level to completely absorb kilovolt level X-ray without any delay or ghosting.

Siemens took the lead in obtaining FDA approval and was the first company to commercialize, produce and put this technology into clinical use.

It is also the only enterprise in the industry that can produce cadmium telluride semiconductor detectors. It has designed a complete process for preparing cadmium telluride crystals, showing strong innovation and research and development capabilities.
