Carbon fiber is a high-strength, high-modulus new fiber material with a carbon content of more than 95%. Its mechanical properties are excellent. In the carbon fiber industry, those with more than 48,000 carbon fibers per bundle (48K for short) are generally referred to as large tow carbon fibers. At present, each bundle of carbon fibers in China is basically between 1000 (1K) and 12,000 (12K), which is called a small tow. The biggest advantage of 48K large tow is that under the same production conditions, the single-line carbon fiber production capacity and quality performance can be greatly improved, and the production can be reduced in cost, thereby breaking the application limitations caused by the high price of carbon fiber.

The company is one of the domestic large-scale integrated refining and chemical enterprises, and was once the largest acrylic fiber manufacturer in China. Relying on the advantages of the acrylic industry, the company took the lead in conducting research and technical research on carbon fiber as early as the 1980s. In 2007, it decided to deploy research and development and industrialization of polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fibers, and implemented the construction project in the company. It cooperates with dozens of scientific research institutes, universities, and enterprises such as Shanghai Carbon fiber Research Institute, Shanghai Engineering Company, Fudan University, etc. With the concerted efforts of various teams, carbon fiber research is rapidly advancing: in November 2008, a pilot project was completed Device; In March 2009, 12K raw silk was successfully developed. In September 2012, using the domestically developed unique sodium thiocyanate wet process and a complete set of technologies with independent intellectual property rights, the first-phase project  with an annual output of 3,000 tons of raw silk and 1,500 tons of carbon fiber was completed and put into operation. Industrial production capacity of 3000 tons of polymer, 1,500 tons of raw silk, and 500 tons of carbon fiber.

5In May 2016, the company launched industrial carbon fiber 48K tow industrialization research trials. In January 2018, the technology of polymerization, spinning, and oxidizing carbonization of large tow carbon fibers was successfully developed, forming the technical basis of a 1,000-tonne polyacrylonitrile-based 48K large tow carbon fiber package technology package. In March, 48K large tow carbon fiber in the true sense of the country was successfully trial-produced, and went through the entire process.

It is understood that since the start of the first-stage 1,000-ton carbon fiber plant, as of May 2018, the plant has produced 4,286 tons of raw silk and 709 tons of carbon fiber.

Usher in a broader application prospect

The carbon fiber has already appeared in the traditional energy field. Carbon fiber pultruded sheet is used to strengthen nine dangerous infrastructure maintenance projects such as the N6 highway in Mozambique, Tianjin Jinbin Expressway overpass, Shenyang-Dandong railway line, and Shenwo reservoir in Liaoning. Not only is the construction efficient and convenient, but the structural capacity is also significantly improved. ; In the carbon fiber gear to replace imported plastic gears, and strengthening and repairing liquid phase propylene, pumping carbon IV, torch gas, methane hydrogen, nitrogen, sewage and other petrochemical pipelines, high corrosion equipment, chemical workshop corroded buildings, etc. have been demonstrated and applied, the effect, good.

It also cooperated with Shengli Oilfield Branch and its reformed enterprise Xinda Pipe Industry Technology Co., Ltd. As of the end of 2017, Shengli Oilfield has used the carbon fiber continuous sucker rods to test a total of 93 wells with a total of 209,000 meters of rods. At present, it is being further promoted and applied, especially the deep corrosive deep wells in the Northwest.

With the appearance of 48K large tow carbon fiber, the carbon fiber technology has a strong driving force to support the development of the industry and usher in a broader application prospect.
