China Next-generation high-performance styrene-based thermoplastic elastomer SEBS

On January 4, the "National Biomedical Materials Production and Application Demonstration Platform Construction" kick-off meeting and implementation plan review meeting was held in Xinxiang, Henan. The construction of a 10,000-ton medical SEBS industrial unit in Baling Petrochemical was included in the construction of the national new material production and application demonstration platform project.

The construction project of "Biomedical Materials Production and Application Demonstration Platform" was led by Henan Tuoren Medical Equipment Group Co., Ltd., and jointly undertaken by 23 institutions including universities, research institutes, and raw material enterprises. The construction and implementation of this project will accelerate the localization and scale-up of key medical raw materials, research and development and production of medical device products that have a dominant position in the domestic market and international competitiveness, and form a one-stop industrial chain from raw materials to product localization.

SEBS is a new generation of high-performance styrenic thermoplastic elastomer. It is a basic thermoplastic rubber material obtained by selective hydrogenation of styrene / butadiene block copolymers with a specific structure design. It is resistant to aging, safe, non-toxic and green. Environmental protection and other characteristics, mainly used in pharmaceutical packaging, medical infusion equipment, food packaging, wire and cable, sealing materials, plastic modification, high-grade asphalt modification, and elastic materials in contact with the human body, etc., is a national strategic emerging industry focus on development product.

Baling Petrochemical is the first domestic enterprise to realize the industrialized production of SEBS. The project of the "new generation of high-performance styrenic thermoplastic elastomer complete technology" project led by the company fills the gap in China's SEBS technology and won the second prize of the 2014 National Science and Technology Progress Award. .

In December 2019, Sinopec Science and Technology led by Baling Petrochemical tackled the "Ten Dragons" project and the "Development and Application of Polymer Materials for Medical Consumables" project went smoothly. During the tackling of the problem, the project team successfully developed 11 special grades of medical consumables. The products developed have passed relevant medical tests and have been applied on a large scale by downstream companies such as Weigao Group. They have cumulatively produced 73,000 tons and applied for 10 Chinese invention patents, of which 4 File authorized. The successful development of polymer materials for medical consumables has broken the monopoly status of foreign companies, promoted the quality upgrade of China's medical polymer industry, enhanced the international competitiveness of the industry, filled domestic product and technology gaps, and solved the problems of China's medical material industry upgrade. The contradiction between the supply and demand of raw materials has played a positive role in reducing the cost of materials for universal medical care in China, providing a successful case for Sinopec's foundation and high-end strategy in the field of materials, with significant social benefits.

At present, Baling Petrochemical's annual production capacity of SEBS exceeds 40,000 tons, and a set of 50,000 tons annual production of SEBS industrialization equipment is under construction, including a 10,000-ton medical SEBS production line.
