China’s MicroDisplay Technology Corporation and porous GaN semiconductor materials technology company Porotech have reached a partnership

On August 13th, Porotech, a startup company spun off by the University of Cambridge, announced the establishment of its first partnership with Jade Bird Display (JBD) in Shanghai, China. According to reports, JBD is a leading company in the field of Micro-LED display technology, and Porotech will provide JBD with its proprietary porous gallium nitride (GaN) technology under this partnership to help it develop and change the entire Technology and products of the electronic display industry.

Porotech`s porous gallium nitride technology is a breakthrough in display technology, which means that in the future, even the smallest display devices can display high-brightness, high-definition and more vivid images. On the other hand, the newly launched Micro-LED on the market in recent years is also a potential technology for products such as smart phones, smart watches and VR/AR headsets to achieve the next leap. Compared with OLED, this technology can achieve high-brightness display. It is particularly useful in outdoor environments-it can increase the display contrast. In traditional display technology, sunlight reflected by the display will greatly reduce the screen contrast of the display.

The current Micro-LED technology has a big problem, that is, its performance will deteriorate as the size of the device decreases. However, Porotech has developed a new type of porous GaN semiconductor material and redefines the potential of Micro-LED with this technology. In addition, this technology is also very suitable for the performance improvement of mass production, and it can even be customized design and production according to the needs of individual customers.

Just last year, Porotech launched the world's first commercial native red indium gallium nitride (InGaN) LED epitaxial wafer for Micro-LED applications. JBD now plans to use Porotech’s porous GaN technology to manufacture InGaN-based red Micro-LED displays, and use them for VR/AR head-mounted devices, AR smart sports goggles, and head-up displays.

"This partnership allows both JBD and Porotech to meet the needs of future Micro-LED displays," said Dr. Tongtong Zhu, CEO and co-founder of Porotech. "Micro-LED displays based on GaN material technology are widely considered to be At present, the only technical solution that can meet the requirements of VR and AR in terms of high brightness and light efficiency. Our proprietary porous gallium nitride technology can well meet these needs. It is very powerful and flexible to use, and can be used according to application requirements. Tailor-made design."

Li Qiming, founder and CEO of JBD, said: “As a leader in Micro-LED display technology, JBD can see the great potential of Porotech’s breakthrough porous GaN technology. In view of this, we have always hoped to cooperate with them and use This revolutionary technology has developed a new generation of microdisplays."

Earlier this year, Porotech had raised £3 million in funding and used it for the next phase of research and development of the company's proprietary Micro-LED production technology. According to reports, this round of financing was led by Speedinvest, followed by previous investors IQ Capital, Cambridge Enterprise, Martlet and Cambridge Angels.

About Porotec

Porotech is a spin-out from the Cambridge Centre for Gallium Nitride in the Dept. of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge. With significant know-how and IP on Porotech's unique production method of a new class of porous GaN semiconductor materials, a wide range of materials properties and functionalities can be engineered.

Porotech is commercialising this porous GaN material platform technology and device solutions in conjunction with its partner and foundry network and offers an entirely new platform for semiconductor devices to be built upon, such as micro-LEDs, lasers, power electronics, quantum computing and communication.
