Chinese researchers successfully prepared high-quality sapphire fiber grating high temperature sensor

High temperature sensor is a key core device in the aerospace field, and has important value in realizing aero engine condition monitoring and fault diagnosis, and high-speed aircraft structural health monitoring. Recently, the team of Professor Wang Yiping of Shenzhen University has made important progress in the research of optical fiber high temperature sensors, and successfully prepared high-quality sapphire fiber grating high temperature sensors, which solved the problem of high-speed aircraft high-temperature structural health monitoring.

The melting point of single crystal sapphire fiber is as high as 2050℃, which is the best choice for high temperature sensor. However, how to prepare a high-temperature sensor in this sapphire fiber is a problem that has long plagued scientific researchers. Professor Wang Yiping’s team proposed that the innovative method of using femtosecond lasers to periodically scribe lines inside single crystal sapphire fibers successfully fabricated a high-quality sapphire fiber grating high-temperature sensor, thereby achieving a 1612°C ultra-high temperature distributed measurement.

Professor Wang Yiping`s team applied the above results to solve the problem of in-situ measurement of ultra-high temperature in the combustion chamber of aero-engines in my country. It is understood that the team has successfully applied high temperature resistant parallel integrated fiber grating sensors to solve the problem of high-speed aircraft high-temperature structural health monitoring.

Professor Wang Yiping is a full-time distinguished professor of Shenzhen University. He led the optical fiber sensing technology innovation team to undertake the National Natural Science Foundation of China, such as the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, Major Research, and Joint Fund Key Projects, and established the Guangdong-Hong Kong Joint Research on Optical Fiber Sensing Technology in Guangdong Province Center, Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Photonic Devices and Sensing System of Internet of Things and Shenzhen Optical Materials Femtosecond Laser Manufacturing Technology Engineering Laboratory. The research center has an ultra-clean laboratory of 500 square meters, equipment worth more than 60 million yuan, and currently has 86 members. Research directions include micro-nano photonic device fabrication technology, extreme environment optical fiber sensing technology, and distributed optical fiber sensing system. The research center adheres to the construction concept of a high starting point and high level, and carries out personnel training, discipline construction, basic research and industrial application around micro-nano photonic devices and optical fiber sensing systems, and is committed to becoming a research center with international influence in this field.
