Chinese scientist create the first space materials laboratory

As a famous university in western China, Northwestern Polytechnical University has a strong comprehensive strength in running schools. As a university directly under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Northwestern University of Technology has a strong engineering strength, and the strength of the three aviation disciplines leads the country. In recent years, the school has vigorously developed basic science construction, and the strength of science has been greatly improved. Among them, one scholar has to mention that he is the leader of the basic disciplines of Northwestern Polytechnical University, the founder of China's first space materials science laboratory, and the academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Wei Bingbo.

Excellent scientific research ability was funded by the Humboldt Fund and became the youngest professor of Northwestern University of Technology.

In order to broaden his horizons and explore the international frontier research fields in the industry, Wei Bingbo applied for and received funding from the German Humboldt Fund. In 1991, he came to the German Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (DIR) for visiting research. The German Academy of Aeronautics and Astronautics is the world's top research institution in the field of aviation, with world-class research conditions and hardware facilities. Here, Wei Bingbo was exposed to the most cutting-edge research results and research facilities in the world, which greatly broadened his vision and horizons.

After that, he also went to the German Metal Research Institute and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology for guest research. Wei Bingbo cherished the advanced scientific research conditions abroad and seized all the time to carry out scientific research. During this period, he focused on the research on the direction of rapid solidification in space material science and achieved fruitful scientific research results. His related research results have reached the international leading level and have been strongly praised by international authorities. Due to outstanding achievements in scientific research, Dai Guanzhong, the president of the Western University of Technology at the time, thought that talents were rare, and tried to appoint him as a distinguished professor, and sent the letter of appointment directly to Wei Bingbo in Germany. At this time, Wei Bingbo was only 28 years old, and he was also the youngest professor at West University of Technology.

Established the first domestic space materials laboratory from scratch, and won the academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences with outstanding scientific research results!

After returning to China at the end of 1992, Wei Bingbo quickly invested in scientific research and began to build a space materials science laboratory. With the strong support of school leaders, Wei Bingbo raised the first batch of 200,000 yuan construction funds for the construction of the laboratory. At the same time, when the office space is very tight, the school provides him with an 80 square meter laboratory. It was under such conditions that were almost impoverished and white, Wei Bingbo started the construction of the first space materials science laboratory in China. In order to build the laboratory as soon as possible, Wei Bingbo worked around the clock almost every day.

After nearly three years of hard work, Wei Bingbo's laboratory has begun to take shape. He simulates space conditions in the laboratory and conducts a series of scientific researches such as the rapid solidification of liquid metal. After unremitting efforts, they have obtained a number of technical patents, and a number of scientific research results are the first at home and abroad, and they are in an international leading position in the direction of liquid metal technology. With his efforts, China has a place in the research of cutting-edge topics such as world space materials.

In addition, Wei Bingbo's team has published a number of academic papers and received special reviews from Nature magazine and the Science website. The scientific research results are remarkable, and he has successively won a number of national awards such as the Second Prize of National Technical Invention and the Second Prize of National Natural Science. In addition, he has also cultivated a group of outstanding scientific research talents, and many of the doctoral students have been nominated for one hundred excellent blogs nationwide.

With outstanding scientific research achievements, various honors followed one after another. Professor Wei Bingbo has been selected as one of the first batch of National Outstanding Youth Fund and the first batch of Yangtze River Scholars Distinguished Professor; in addition, he has successively won many important honorary titles such as the China Youth Science and Technology Award, the National Expert with Outstanding Contribution, and the National May 1st Labor Medal. In 2011, Professor Wei Bingbo, who was only 47 years old, was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and was also the youngest academician in the field of materials that year.

Established Northwestern Polytechnical University College of Science and Basic Research Institute, and vigorously promoted the school's basic discipline construction.

While doing scientific research, Wei Bingbo also attaches great importance to discipline construction. After Wei Bingbo returned to China in 1992, he established a material physics and chemistry subject with space materials science as the main training direction from scratch. Has applied for and been approved for the undergraduate major of materials physics; the master's degree of materials physics and condensed matter physics, and the doctoral program of materials physics and chemistry. In 2001, the subject was also rated as a national key subject.

In addition, Wei Bingbo attaches great importance to the construction of basic disciplines. Under his vigorous promotion, Northwestern University of Technology established the School of Science and the Institute of Basic Research, and personally served as the first dean. The Faculty of Science of Xi'an University of Technology was formed in July 2003 by the merger of the former Department of Applied Mathematics, Department of Applied Physics and Department of Chemical Engineering. At the beginning of the establishment of the institute, the school mission of "based on national defense, serving the three airlines, and carrying out applied scientific research" was determined, and the California Institute of Technology was taken as an example. In 2006, West University of Technology established the Institute of Basic Research, which aims to stimulate basic research in the school. The institute selects and cultivates projects in full accordance with the standards of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and allocates 10 million yuan each year to fund basic research projects of the West University of Technology.
