Composite Resources, a manufacturer of industrial and racing composites, and Pyromeral Systems, a manufacturer of high-temperature glass ceramics and oxide composites, jointly develop high-temperature ceramic matrix composite technology

Composite Resources of the United States, which specializes in the manufacture of composite materials for defense, industry, and racing, has formed a manufacturing alliance with Pyromeral Systems of France, which develops high-temperature glass ceramic and oxide composite technology. Both parties will share high-temperature technology with a view to achieving breakthroughs in space and defense applications.

Composite Resources will have the right to use Pyromeral Systems ’high-temperature technology to produce high-temperature composite parts that are suitable for the International Arms Trade Regulations (ITAR) for the US defense sector.

Pyromeral Systems has decades of development history (since 1984) in the development and industrialization of high-temperature material technology. Its component manufacturing capabilities have achieved great success in European racing and defense. The company has developed three major material technologies. Two of them are based on the proprietary technology of glass-ceramic matrix composite materials, usually using carbon fiber (corresponding to PyroKarb composite material) or silicon carbide fiber (corresponding to PyroSic composite material) as a reinforcement.

The above materials are usually used under low temperature conditions. In manufacturing technology and tooling equipment, they are almost the same as ordinary carbon fiber reinforced composite materials (CFRP). PyroSic has an operating temperature of 700 ° C, a tensile strength of 300 MPa, and a bending strength of 350 MPa. PyroKarb has a service temperature of 350 ° C, a tensile strength of 250 MPa, and a bending strength of 270 MPa. Both have excellent fire performance.

The third material of Pyromeral Systems is PyroXide, which has just been patented in 2019. It can replace oxide solutions and shows extremely flexible manufacturing capabilities in the manufacture of complex structural components. At the same time, the material can be exposed to high temperatures for a long time. For example, it can be exposed to thousands of hours at 1000 ° C without any loss of mechanical properties. PyroXide is a ceramic matrix composite material reinforced with 3M's Nextel ceramic oxide fibers, with a tensile strength of 300 MPa and a bending strength of 350 MPa.

These materials can be used in the manufacture of heat shields, exhaust systems, radomes and hypersonic structural parts.
