Covestro and Teknor Apex announce cooperation agreement on composite thermoplastic polyurethane TPU

Covestro, a material manufacturer, and TeknorApex, a global manufacturer of plastic composite materials, plan to work closely on composite thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and have signed the cooperation agreement for this purpose. TPU is an extremely versatile plastic. For many years, Covestro has been producing pure TPU materials for use in different industries. Through composite technology, that is, mixing TPU with other materials can further greatly increase the various properties of TPU materials. This is the unique advantage of TeknorApex.

"We are pleased to work with such a partner with outstanding capabilities and complementary strengths to process TPUs globally," said Dr. Thorsten Dreier, the new global head of Covestro's TPU business. "We hope to develop customized products with TeknorApex to achieve common growth with existing and new customers." Covestro supports the marketing of products jointly developed with TeknorApex under its Desmoflex® brand.

Provide customized services

"We are very pleased to be Covestro's preferred global composites partner. Covestro's expertise in TPU resins combined with TeknorApex's custom formulation and material compounding capabilities provide an attractive value driver for both our customers worldwide , "Sachin Sakhalkar, vice president of TPE at TeknorApex, said. "We provide tailored material solutions for the application needs of our customers and partners. This new collaboration strengthens our commitment to our customers."

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is widely used in the automotive industry, sports and leisure products, IT and electronics industry, medical technology and other fields, and can be made according to customer requirements, from soft to hard, elastic to rigid performance. All products have high abrasion resistance as well as chemical resistance and weather resistance. Plastic raw material particles can be processed into moldings, strips, hoses, fibers, films or foams.

Compared to using pure resins only, the formulation and compounding steps can be used to create additional value propositions. For example, specific formulations and compounding techniques can be used to improve specific end-use requirements, such as flame retardancy, adhesion, appearance, and tactility.
