Covestro develops 5G base station case materials

On July 8, Michael Schmidt, Covestro ’s vice president of innovation for the Asia-Pacific region, said that the material manufacturer has successfully developed a housing material suitable for 5G base stations.

Schmack said that 5G technology has the characteristics of high frequency and short wavelength, resulting in a large degree of signal attenuation, which means that the deployment of a large number of 5G micro base stations needs to continuously amplify the signal to ensure signal coverage. Compared to the 4G era, the number of 5G micro base stations is expected to increase about 20 times.

In the process of developing a 5G base station, it must be ensured that the high-frequency signals of 5G can penetrate the casing smoothly, which places higher requirements on materials. More than a year ago, Covestro's polymer research and development center in Shanghai launched this experiment on 5G base station casing materials. The R & D center was established in 2001 and currently has more than 200 employees.
