Covestro polycarbonate blend powers BMZ GmbH battery home storage

The use and storage of renewable energy is also increasingly used in private and commercial environments: stationary battery energy storage systems based on lithium-ion battery technology have broad market prospects. BMZ GmbH, a leading system supplier for lithium-ion batteries, has developed this battery home storage device, which is also sold under its own name as the EES 7.0, EES 9.0, and ESS X storage series. This means that the use of renewable solar energy generated in photovoltaic systems in private and commercial applications can be more independent of the time of day and the position of the sun.

Covestro supports a variety of BMZ battery projects, including material selection, plastic compatible component design, and CAE-based component simulation to meet the requirements of the United Nations Battery Transportation Test (UN 38.3). Further services include mold flow analysis and technical injection molding support.

Covestro's Jens Ufermann, who also looks after the local BMZ GmbH, said: "Every battery project is technically demanding, which is why I am very impressed that Covestro's plastics can make an important contribution here. Happy. Together with customers such as BMZ, we are committed to sustainable product and application development to master the challenges of future battery technology. "

High requirements for fixed and mobile applications

Similar to battery systems for mobile applications such as cars, buses, scooters and scooters, energy density and safety are important aspects in developing stationary battery products, as is the energy storage system of BMZ GmbH.

Dr. Julian Marschewski, Market Development Manager, Battery Packing for Electric Vehicles, said: "Our in-depth knowledge of the different applications of battery systems and our many years of experience in battery application materials have enabled us to provide our customers with technical expertise and suitable products. "

Polycarbonate blends with custom properties

Bayblend® (PC ABS) blends from Covestro play an important role in both mobile and stationary battery applications, such as placing a single cylindrical battery cell in 18650 or 21700 format in a battery holder. In order to achieve this, the material must have excellent mechanical properties, first of all high impact strength, but also high fluidity in order to achieve the thinnest possible wall between individual battery cells when manufacturing battery holders by injection molding.

According to the UL 94V-0 category, additional safety is provided in subsequent use by combining flame retardant grades that meet the high flame retardant standards of the insurer's laboratory.

Variety of products

Covestro's battery application portfolio is continuing to evolve. For battery holders used to hold cylindrical battery cells, pouch-shaped battery frames, battery cases and similar applications, focus on unfilled (Bayblend® FR3010, Bayblend® FR3040) and mineral filled (Bayblend® FR3020, Bayblend® FR3021) Glass fiber reinforced (Bayblend® FR3060 EV) flame retardant product Bayblend®. Covestro also offers thermally conductive polycarbonate grades from the Makrolon® TC product line to aid battery thermal management.
