Demand for recycled plastics grows, Austria’s ALPLA to partner with PTT Global Chemical (GC) to build potential recycling plant

Austrian processor ALPLA will work with PTT Global Chemical (GC) to conduct a feasibility study to build a recycling plant in Thailand.

ALPLA has two recycling plants in Austria and Poland, and joint ventures in Germany and Mexico. ALPLA has become the preferred partner for PET recycling and is currently considering expanding this business in Thailand.

GC is a leader in the chemical industry of the PTT Group. The company has been working on the principles of a circular economy and has been developing bioplastics as an alternative type of plastic and implementing effective waste management systems.

"GC will work with ALPLA to conduct a study on investing in Thailand's first high-quality recycled plastic recycling plant, including materials such as rPET and rHDPE. We will make a decision after evaluating the research results in the third quarter of this year." Executive Officer Supattanapong Punmeechaow said.

Including Southeast Asia, demand for recycled plastics is growing. Bernd Wachter, ALPLA's regional manager, said: "In particular, superior recycling quality has played a big role. We have expertise in the manufacture of food-grade recycled materials, and we are experts in processing these materials into new packaging. With GC Together, we can implement a state-of-the-art program for the country and the entire region. "

In 2018, ALPLA signed the Global Commitment to the New Plastics Economy with the Allen MacArthur Foundation and the United Nations Environment Programme.
