DSM, SABIC, and UPM Biofuels work together to create a high-performance bio-based fiber material Dyneema®

Royal DSM Group, SABIC and UPM Biofuels today announced a partnership to reduce the ecological footprint of high-performance fiber material Dyneema®.

With SABIC's breakthrough solution for certified renewable products, TRUCIRCLE ™, this collaboration will transform Dyneema® into a bio-based raw material.

In December 2019, DSM announced a series of ambitious sustainability goals for Dyneema® high-performance fibers. This series of development goals includes that by 2030, at least 60% of Dyneema®'s raw materials will be derived from bio-based raw materials.

The transition to bio-based raw materials will maintain the unique performance of Dyneema®, enabling customers to adopt more sustainable solutions without affecting process efficiency and end product performance. Dyneema® (Dyneema®) bio-based materials will continue to maintain the globally recognized ISCC Plus certification, and do not need to re-certify its downstream products. Bio-based Dyneema® will be available in April 2020.

This Dyneema® is made from UPM BioVerno bio-based raw materials produced by UPM Biofuels. UPM BioVerno is a by-product of the pulping process. This raw material will be processed under the framework of TRUCIRCLE solution by Saudi Basic Industries Corporation to produce renewable ethylene.

The TRUCIRCLE solution framework includes certified renewable products, especially resins and chemicals from bio-based raw materials, which will not compete with the food chain and help reduce carbon emissions.

By using the mass balance method, DSM was able to manufacture Dyneema® fibers based on biological raw materials, providing consistent durability and performance while reducing environmental impact. This cooperation demonstrates DSM's commitment to work closely with partners and suppliers to achieve (more) sustainable value chains.

Wilfried Gambad, President of DSM Protective Materials, said: "By partnering with SABIC and UPM Biofuels, we are taking the next important step in our sustainable development journey and driving our industry from The transition from traditional resources to renewable resources. What we are doing is to enhance the influence of materials with our partners to help protect humans and the environment in which they live. Therefore, we are actually using our colorful technology to create beautiful life."

Mark Vester, SABIC's global circular economy manager, said: "We firmly believe that true cooperation and innovation will bring about positive changes. Through our TRUCIRCLE ™ program, we are more committed than ever to recycling used plastics by 2020 Closed loop. We are pleased to be able to reach cooperation with DSM and UPM Biofuels, which is also an important step towards transforming the value chain, creating a circular, transparent and sustainable economy. "

Juha Rainio, UPM Biofuels Sales and Marketing Director, said: "We are committed to replacing fossil raw materials with renewable raw materials. The cooperation with SABIC and DSM Group is an excellent example of the future picture of humanity beyond fossil raw materials A picture is also a key driving force for UPM to move forward. "
