Eastman introduces breakthrough engineering bioplastics, Eastman TRēVATM, a high-performance and sustainable cellulose-based material

Guangzhou, China, May 15, 2017—Eastman Chemical, a global specialty chemical company and the world's leading producer of cellulosic materials, launches the breakthrough engineering bioplastic Eastman TRēVATM, designed to help global brands in today's rapidly growing market China meets both high performance and sustainable development requirements.

Burt Capel, vice president and general manager of Eastman Specialty Plastics, officially introduced the innovative material to the media at the China Plastics & Rubber Show in Guangzhou. He said, "To meet the sustainable and high-performance needs of brands, manufacturers, injection molders and other companies throughout the value chain, Eastman has used nearly 100 years of cellulose expertise in the design and testing of TRēVATM. Knowledge."

TRēVATM has three advantages: sustainability, end-application performance, design freedom and brand differentiation.

Sustainability

Approximately half of the TRēVATM material is derived from cellulose in trees. Wood is derived from sustainable forests certified by the US Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and is free of bisphenol A and phthalates.

The material has excellent fluidity, durability, dimensional stability (thus making thinner parts with less raw materials), longer product life, and better life cycle assessment.

End application performance

Compared with other engineering bioplastics, TRēVATM has excellent chemical resistance and can withstand very harsh chemicals such as skin oils, sunscreens and household cleaners.

The material's low birefringence can eliminate the rainbow effect of some plastics under polarized light, thereby improving the user experience of electronic device screens and retail displays.

Design freedom and brand differentiation

TRēVATM's excellent fluidity also gives it design flexibility, which can be used to make complex parts and fill thin parts. A recent 0.75mm thin-walled spiral fluid flow test showed that under the recommended processing conditions, TRēVATM had significantly higher fluidity than polycarbonate and polycarbonate / ABS blends, comparable to ABS.

Taking advantage of Eastman's substrates and technical expertise, TR 具有 VATM has excellent surface gloss, transparency and warm touch and feel. The material also has excellent color saturation and excellent secondary processing and decoration functions, which provides more options for design and brand differentiation.

Application

TRēVATM has excellent sustainability, safety benefits, end-use performance, and design and brand flexibility, making it an ideal material for the following applications:

● Spectacle frames, wearable electronics, headphones, and many other personal devices that come in direct contact with the skin;

● Consumer-readable electronic display applications such as lenses and housings;

● Products with high design requirements and complex specifications such as electronic products, housings, and complex cosmetic packaging;

● Automotive interior parts that require chemical resistance and aesthetics;

● Other applications that place high demands on sustainability and safety.

Innovate with Eastman

In addition to developing innovative materials, Eastman has also worked effectively with customers for a long time to help customers with their product design and development efforts by providing technical and design expertise to reduce their time to market. Capel said, "Eastman is committed to meeting the unmet needs of current and potential customers. Many brands around the world have already developed initial interest in us and we are happy to work closely with them to jointly create a new generation of high-performance, Continuous product. "
