Evonik joins hands with DNV GL and Airborne Oil & Gas Company to obtain authoritative certification for carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite pipes

Evonik's carbon fiber reinforced PA12 has been authoritatively certified by DNV GL for the manufacture of thermoplastic composite pipes in the oil and gas industry!

After years of unremitting efforts, the pioneers of the TCP industry finally succeeded in February 2020 and announced the first carbon fiber reinforced material that fully complies with the TCP industry certification DNV GL ST-F119 standard.

Evonik completed the comprehensive development and certification of VESTAPE® carbon fiber PA12 composite unidirectional belts over several years. The product has been proven to process sour crude oil at high temperatures up to 80 ° C.

As a precedent among similar projects, the project not only proved the reliability of the DNV GL certification standard, but also proved that it can lay the foundation for the commercial use of the most advanced carbon fiber reinforced TCP pipeline system in the future.

WinCreation is a leader in the supply of thermoplastic materials, leading the development, certification and supply of carbon fiber reinforced PA12 composite tapes for high-end TCP applications. Evonik has developed from zero to now, the advanced equipment of the German Marl plant has been able to steadily supply carbon fiber reinforced PA12 composite strip.

Vitor Lavini, Director of Evonik ’s Industrial and Oil & Gas Business Unit: “We are very excited to achieve this important milestone. As a PA12 supplier of subsea flexible pipelines and onshore natural gas infrastructure, we are convinced that Evonik PA12 materials VESTAPE® can provide high-performance TCP products for the oil and gas industry. "

The carbon fiber used by Evonik comes from the world's leading manufacturer, which is also one of the suppliers of carbon fiber in the aerospace and automotive industries.

After the carbon fiber was delivered to the Marl plant in Germany, it was matched with a customized PA12 polymer to make an in-situ carbon fiber-reinforced PA12 composite tape. It was then delivered to Airborne Oil and Gas's plant in the Netherlands to further produce the well-known TCP flexible pipeline. The entire production process is subject to DNV GL supervision and approval.

Martin Strande, head of pipelines, materials and testing at DNV GL, added: “The oil and gas industry is increasingly recognizing thermoplastic composite pipelines as an alternative to traditional solutions, which can help to significantly reduce the cost of the entire project cycle. The F119 standard sets the benchmark for the safety of offshore thermoplastic composite pipes. The Evonik VESTAPE® PA12 carbon fiber composite belt certified by this standard is one of the first in the industry. "

In response to the challenges currently faced in the field of subsea pipelines, TCP pipelines are gradually becoming the first choice as a safe and economical solution.

Henk de Boer, Chief Technology Officer of Airborne Oil and Gas Company, said: "Airborne Oil and Gas Company is very proud of its achievements in the field of TCP, and also thanks Evonik and DNV GL for their full support to help us achieve this research and development goal. With this latest As a result, we are expected to broaden the product line that meets market needs and continue to provide highly safe and reliable pipeline solutions for our industry.
