Evonik’s special silica SPHERILEX® 148 provides dental health protection

Toothpaste cleans your teeth mainly with abrasives. The commonly used abrasive silicon dioxide has stable properties and does not react with other ingredients in the paste, such as fluoride, Chinese herbal medicine, and spices. It has been widely used in the toothpaste industry since the 1970s. Evonik's new special synthetic amorphous silicon dioxide SPHERILEX® 148 can do more than just "clean"-it is also a product that can help "reshape your teeth".

Alleviates sensitivity, lasting protection, efficient cleaning

Evonik's SPHERILEX® production technology is a revolutionary patented production process that allows materials to have a unique spherical structure, a very narrow particle size distribution, and uniform porosity. Thanks to its unique technical advantages, approximately 40% of the particles in SPHERILEX® 148 are smaller than the dentin tubules. Laboratory research shows that compared with traditional non-spherical precipitated silica, it has a higher affinity and can effectively block the dentin tubules, thereby blocking the invasion of hot and cold liquids, and alleviating tooth sensitivity. The carefully polished shape of the spherical particles helps to make it appear smoother than other traditional silica when brushing, and can still reside in the dentin tubules after brushing, providing long-lasting protection to the dentin .

In addition, SPHERILEX® 148 can achieve a high level of cleaning performance at low addition levels, fully remove tartar on the tooth surface, and reduce foreign substances such as dental stains and plaque. On the other hand, studies have shown that it has a low degree of wear on the enamel surface, which can help toothpaste achieve a perfect balance between cleaning power and damage to teeth.

Evonik has a huge product portfolio of precipitated silica. In addition to SPHERILEX® 148 under the SPHERILEX® spherical synthetic amorphous silica series, there are other specifications that can be used in toothpaste with different functions. For example, SPHERILEX® 145, which is particularly suitable for whitening toothpaste formulations containing phosphates, provides a high degree of cleansing at 15-20%. At the same time, it has a moderate level of wear on the teeth, which can reduce the wear on enamel, metal and plastic.
