Formlabs launches Tough 1500 resin for 3D printing rigid and flexible parts

On February 12, 2020, Formlabs released the latest member of its 3D printing materials portfolio, Tough 1500 resin, which is a new resin designed for rigid and flexible parts that can flex and Quickly restore its original shape.

Tough 1500 is a member of Formlabs' Tough and Durable photosensitive resin family. Its stiffness, elongation and polypropylene-like properties make it unique, making it ideal for producing functional prototypes, fixtures and fixtures A connector that temporarily flexes; basically simulates the strength and rigidity of a product that will be made of polypropylene.

Formlabs said that most of the technical performance of Tough 1500 resin is between its Tough Resin and durable resin. Formlabs claims that it will have high resilience and rapid resilience, and can balance elongation and modulus.

Ultimate tensile strength: 33MPa

Tensile modulus: 1500MPa elongation at break: 51%

Flexural modulus: 1400MPa

IZOD impact test: 67J / m

Unplugged Performance is a leader in Tesla car upgrades and customization. It has been using this material to produce sensor brackets for customized car bumpers.

Before using 3D printing, the company needed about 45 minutes to remove each sensor bracket from the existing bumper, and it took another 10 minutes to install it on the new bumper. Each car is equipped with 6 sensors, plus other custom upgrade work, it takes them a day and a half to complete the upgrade service of a car.

Now they can print 30 new sensor mounts per batch, which saves the need to remove the sensor bracket from the existing bumper, and only needs to install the sensor bracket, which saves a lot of time . Eventually, their production can be increased to the upgrade service of three vehicles per day.

Printing with Tough 1500 allows parts to be easily clamped in and fixed to various sensors, and its high impact strength can also safely install the sensor in the bumper of the car. Formlabs said the material opens new application areas for the company to create visible custom parts and integrate them into the interior of the vehicle.

Tough 1500 resin is the first new engineering resin in the Form 3 ecosystem. Formlabs is providing customers with samples of springs that show the elasticity of the material and the ability to be easily removed from the support.
