German textile machinery manufacturer KARL MAYER launches new thermoplastic unidirectional prepreg tape production line Efficient combination of fiber expansion and prepreg

KARL MAYER has many years of experience in the production of carbon fiber / glass fiber non-crimp fabrics. The launch of the new mass production line is to seek a balance between high output, high quality and high efficiency at a reasonable cost.

In order to achieve this, KARL MAYER has extended the original fiber spreading technology and added heating and prepreg process modules to finally create such a new mass production line that integrates fiber spreading and prepreg functions. The efficient production of a wide, wide prepreg zone marks the further consolidation of KARL MAYER's quality system supplier.

Outstanding quality

This new line realizes the organic combination of fiber exhibition and prepreg, and adopts proven technology proven in the market. Among them, the equipment required for the fiber exhibition link has been upgraded on the original basis to ensure that the fiber layer after the fiber exhibition is thin enough to facilitate the full infiltration of the base material in the subsequent pre-impregnation link. It not only realizes the seamless connection of the two process links of fiber spreading and prepreg, but also means a better combination between the reinforcing material and the matrix material, ensuring that the quality of the fiber layer will not be affected by the subsequent prepreg link.

The next prepreg process uses thermoplastic film stacking technology. Its advantage is that it can precisely control the amount of matrix used and the fiber content of the finished product. The base material and fiber will be tightly bonded through multiple layers of infrared heating. Then, the preliminary formed prepreg tape is moderately pressurized, cooled, cut and wound to become the final required thermoplastic fiber reinforced unidirectional prepreg tape product. Its fiber orientation is highly consistent, making it an ideal material for high pressure resistant lightweight structures.

Cost and efficiency balance

This new mass production line has a working width of up to 800 mm and a production speed of up to 10 m / min. Taking glass fiber yarn as an example, the line density that can be processed is up to 2400tex. In addition, taking into account the individual needs of customers, the materials used in the new line and the set technical parameters can be adjusted flexibly. Its purchase cost is much lower than other similar products in the market. If the steel belt is replaced with a Teflon-coated conveyor belt, its purchase cost will be further reduced. In addition, the new line can be equipped with a quality control module to meet the strict quality requirements of customers, including automotive OEMs.

According to KARL MAYER, this new thermoplastic unidirectional prepreg tape production line will be premiered at the Barcelona Textile Machinery Show in June 2019, and will be displayed again at the KARL MAYER Chemnitz plant in the fall of 2019. Production samples.
