Germany built the world’s first mesh-type diagonal suspension arch bridge suspended completely on CFRP tension elements

72 carbon fiber booms were installed on the 127-meter-long railway bridge, which met the installation, quality and sustainability goals.

The Stuttgart-Stadbahn Bridge was installed on the A8 highway in Germany on May 3, and is the world's first net-type diagonal suspender arch bridge suspended completely on CFRP tension elements. These 72 booms are made of carbon fiber, which is different from the original plan of the traditional steel bridge.

CFRP cable has more advantages than steel cable. Carbon fiber cables are cheaper and can cross 8 highway lanes without support columns, ideally meeting the requirements of a mesh diagonal suspender arch bridge: Compared to steel solutions, the cross-sectional area of CFRP diagonal cables Only a quarter. In addition, due to its light weight, 72 CFRP tension elements can be installed without the need for cranes and only three construction workers.

The addition of CFRP to the 127-meter-long railway bridge created a precedent for sustainable development. EMPA (Swiss Federal Institute of Materials Testing) has proven that carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from carbon fiber manufacturing are one-third that of steel, and energy consumption has been reduced by more than half.

The development of carbon fiber applications in the construction and construction industry is advancing rapidly. The person in charge said: "The Stuttgart Railway Bridge is the first mesh arch bridge made entirely of CFRP stay cables. It should be groundbreaking. We are just at the beginning of multiple possibilities."
