HELLA develops battery module solution for light hybrid 48V vehicles

According to multiple studies by IHS Markit, the global annual registration of 48V light hybrid vehicles is expected to increase from 6 million in 2020 to 35 million by 2030, and the groundbreaking provided by automotive lighting and electronic components supplier Hela The battery module solution can be used in light hybrid 48V vehicles.

According to foreign media reports, the pioneering battery module solution provided by automotive lighting and electronic component supplier Haila can be used in light hybrid 48V vehicles. It is reported that Hella ’s new dual-voltage battery management system and PowerPack 48V products help reduce the carbon emissions of the vehicle. CO2 emissions can be reduced by 5-6 grams for each kilometer of the vehicle.

Hella has developed a dual-voltage battery management system for compact and medium-sized vehicles. If the system is adopted, diesel locomotives may be transformed into light hybrid vehicles. The company is expected to integrate traditionally independent core components such as 48V batteries, 12V batteries and transformers. Into a product (using a system package design), the volume of this packaged product is similar to that of a traditional lead-acid battery. To this end, the system can be easily integrated into the current vehicle architecture.

Another advantage of this system is that the advent of dual-voltage battery management systems eliminates the need for vehicles to be equipped with lead-acid batteries. The system consists of lithium-ion battery cells, which can implement intelligent switching functions based on the use of automotive applications. Therefore, the battery capacity can be used for 12V vehicle power supply system or 48V vehicle power supply system. Hella also designed the PowerPack 48V product, which can be applied to high-power vehicles. The product includes a 48V lithium-ion battery pack with a built-in battery management module and DC converter.

PowerPack 48V products can support hybrid kinetic energy, such as regenerative braking. When the vehicle's internal combustion engine is turned off during driving, the brake operation and active idle travel can be used to ensure that the vehicle continues to move forward, thereby restoring some power and improving the driving comfort of the vehicle. This function is usually configured in luxury car models. These features also include ambient lighting, automatic climate control, and active chassis control.

According to several studies by IHS Markit, it is estimated that by 2030, the global annual registration volume of 48V light hybrid vehicles will increase from 6 million in 2020 to 35 million. HELLA can produce corresponding products for various types of on-vehicle equipment such as light-duty vehicle battery sensor systems (automatic start-stop systems), and power electronic components of light-duty hybrid vehicles. Its battery electrical components can be suitable for all high-voltage applications of electric vehicles .
