High gloss stainless/corrosion-resistant magnesium alloy Hay: A03LXJD

On January 9, 2024, at the CES 2024 exhibition held in Las Vegas, Lenovo unveiled the world’s first high gloss stainless magnesium laptop – the ThinkBook X Gen 4.

The outer shell of this computer is made of a new stainless magnesium alloy developed by LXJD, giving the sides of the ThinkBook X Gen 4 a stunning high gloss metallic appearance.

Conventional commercial magnesium alloys have poor corrosion resistance and are prone to producing oxidized black spots, making it difficult to achieve a high gloss metallic appearance.

The LXJD R&D team has accumulated five years of innovation to address the bottleneck issue of corrosion in magnesium alloys.
Based on the idea of material genetic engineering, high-throughput computing and machine learning technology are combined to establish an ultra fast and massive computing platform and database for key corrosion parameters of magnesium alloys.

A series of high-performance stainless magnesium alloys have been developed by combining the self passivation dynamic corrosion resistance technology proposed by the research team to achieve long-term corrosion resistance of stainless magnesium alloys.

In 2023, based on existing research accumulation, key processes such as purification preparation, uniform plastic forming, and heat treatment optimization of corrosion-resistant and rust resistant magnesium alloy materials will be innovated.

The team successfully developed a low-cost, high gloss stainless magnesium alloy suitable for appearance parts of consumer electronics products in just six months, with a salt spray corrosion rate of only 0.076 mg/cm ²/ Day, the corrosion resistance is more than 10 times that of conventional commercial magnesium alloys, reaching the highest level in the industry.

Corrosion resistant magnesium alloy has been selected as one of the “Top 10 Technology Trends of Lenovo Research Institute in 2023”. It has been certified as a carbon neutral product by the British Standards Institute (BSI), including TCO certification and Energy Star certification, and has also received EPEAT gold certification.

At present, the series of corrosion-resistant and rust resistant magnesium alloys developed by Shanghai Jiao Tong University have been successfully prepared on a large scale and at a low cost in the fields of aerospace, electronic information, and marine equipment, and are expected to be further promoted in more civilian fields such as automobiles, communications and transportation.
