High-performance aluminum alloy overhead conductor materials: heat-resistant high-conductivity Al-Zr-Y conductor materials, high-strength and fatigue-resistant Al-Mg-Si conductors won the 2018 National Science and Technology Award

Overhead conductors are one of the largest and most critical components of the power grid. For every 1% IACS increase in the electrical conductivity of the wire, the country saves more than 7 billion kilowatt-hours of wire loss each year. However, there is a contradiction between increasing electrical conductivity and simultaneously increasing strength and heat resistance. After more than ten years of research, the project team has invented heat-resistant high-conductivity Al-Zr-Y wire material and its preparation technology, high-strength anti-fatigue Al-Mg-Si wire and its preparation technology, and wire metallurgy quality control technology. New products with more than ten kinds of wires in three major categories, such as heat-resistant capacity-enhancing conductors, ultra-high-voltage spanning conductors, and energy-saving conductors, have improved the overall conductivity by more than 1% IACS. The project is of great significance to improve the level of overhead wire materials and their preparation technology in China, and promote the construction of national power grids and energy conservation and emission reduction.
