Honda Motor Co Ltd’s CR-V mid-size SUV uses more high-strength steel plates: cold-rolled materials at 980MPa grade, hot-rolled materials at 1.5GPa grade, and 780MPa materials

Honda Motor Co Ltd has completely remodeled the CR-V mid-size SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) and has launched it in Japan. The car uses high-strength steel plates with a body frame mass ratio of 36%, which can improve vehicle collision safety without increasing the weight of many vehicles.

Honda considers steel plates with a strength of 780 MPa or higher as high-strength steel plates. The high-strength steel used in the frame of the original version of the CR-V (listed in 2011) only accounts for about 10% of the entire frame. Honda uses only 780 MPa-grade cold-rolled materials as the center pillar material for the car.

For the new (fifth generation) CR-V SUV, Honda increased the use of high-strength steel plates to 36%, which is 3.6 times the original (fourth generation) model. In addition, the company has recently adopted cold-rolled materials of 980MPa grade, hot-rolled materials of 1.5GPa grade, and 780MPa materials.

Honda uses 1.5GPa grade steel in the center pillar, front pillar and side beams of the new CR-V. In the original version, 780MPa grade steel plates were used in such places. In addition, the company uses 980MPa and 780MPa grade steel plates in the front of the body, while the original version mainly used 590MPa grade steel plates.

The new CR-V (four-wheel drive model) measures 4,605 (length) x 1,855 (width) x 1,690 mm (height) and has a wheelbase of 2,660 mm. Compared with the previous model, it is 2,370 mm longer, 35 mm wider, and 5 mm higher. In addition, the wheelbase is 40 mm longer than the previous model.

The body of the new car is one size larger than the previous model. Therefore, Honda increased the use of high-strength steel plates to reduce the increase in quality. In addition, the company's newly adopted 980MPa and 1.5GPa grade stronger steel plates can easily cope with the collision between the certificate and the side plate.
