HP launches metal-jet 3D printer, Volkswagen has begun to use it

Since entering the 3D printing industry, HP has continuously introduced new products with strong technical advantages, and has continued to make efforts on the market side. On the one hand, it has promoted the development of 3D printing technology and the industry, and at the same time it has brought a lot of benefits to competitors pressure. Earlier, HP Jet Fusion multi-jet fusion 3D printer released by HP can be said to have achieved good results, and the recently rumored HP metal 3D printer has finally been released, which will also have a significant impact on the metal 3D printing market.

On September 11, 2018, Antarctic Bear learned from foreign media that HP yesterday introduced the HP Metal Jet 3D printing technology at the International Manufacturing Technology Show 2018 (IMTS) for the mass production of metal parts. According to HP, Metal Jet is a "voxel-grade adhesive spray technology" that is 50 times more efficient than current metal 3D printing systems.

HP Metal Jet's powder bed measures 430 x 320 x 200mm. The company says it may be cheaper and more efficient than other metal 3D printing solutions. HP Metal Jet will start with finished stainless steel parts and provide isotropic performance that meets or exceeds ASTM and MPIF standards.

HP has partnered with GKN Powder Metallurgy and Parmatech to produce metal jet parts for Johnson & Johnson, Volkswagen, Wilo, Okay Industries and Primo Medical Group. Volkswagen is currently using the technology for customizable components such as personalized key rings and external nameplates. Volkswagen's future plan is to use HP Metal Jet to produce high-performance features with important structural requirements, such as shift knobs and mirror mounts.

In the first half of 2019, customers will be able to manufacture 3D design files using metal spray technology. These parts will be produced by HP partners GKN Powder Metallurgy and Parmatech and HP engineers to help guide them through the process.

HP Metal Jet 3D printers will sell for less than $ 399,000 (about 2.74 million yuan) and will begin shipping to early customers in 2020 and launch in 2021.
