South Korea Hyosung Advanced Materials Corp.'s (Hyosung Advanced Materials Corp.) carbon fiber business unit has developed a new type of high-strength medium-mold carbon fiber suitable for the next generation of aviation primary and secondary structural parts.
At present, this type of carbon fiber has only 24k tow products, and 6k and 3k products are also coming soon. Hyosung officially stated that the tensile strength of this type of carbon fiber product is higher than the existing medium modulus carbon fiber on the international market. The main mechanical properties include a tensile strength of 6120 MPa and an elastic modulus of 293GPa (Toray T800 carbon fiber tensile strength of 5490MPa and elastic modulus of 294GPa). At present, the product has two specifications: no sizing agent (suitable for thermoplastic resin) and standard epoxy resin sizing agent.
Hyosung is the first company in South Korea to successfully develop high-performance carbon fiber independently. In May 2013, a plant with an annual output of 2,000 tons was built in Jeonju, Jeollabuk, South Korea. This time, the development of carbon fiber products for aviation will further expand the application field of Hyosung carbon fiber.
