LANXESS expands reverse osmosis membrane product range with new Lewabrane HP membrane element

On February 20, LANXESS expanded its portfolio of reverse osmosis membrane elements. The new Lewabrane HP (High Performance) series includes elements consisting of an enhanced brackish water film to meet the needs of applications where high rejection and energy efficiency are important. The new product combined with the monodispersed Lewatit ion exchange resin can provide high-quality produced water at lower operating costs. LANXESS will present the newly developed Lewabrane HP membrane element for the first time at the AMTA / AWWA Membrane Technology Conference and Exhibition from 25th to 28th of this month.

The new product line, with an average salt rejection rate of 99.7% (conditions of 2000 ppm NaCl; 225 psi) and high permeability, is a further development of the highly crosslinked polyamide membrane launched by LANXESS in 2012. Controlling the degree of polyamide cross-linking during the production process will form a small effective "pore size", achieving high solute retention, regardless of the charge carried by the solute.

Dr. Jens Lipinzki, Head of Technical Marketing of Membrane Products, LANXESS Liquid Purification Technology Business Unit, said, "By optimizing the process, the flux can be increased without affecting the quality of the permeation. Therefore, even in feed water parameters (such as pH or salinity) With changing conditions, high retention rates can also be achieved at high throughput rates, "

Stay productive even under changing conditions

Reverse osmosis technology is used for desalination and purification of water. This technology has been rapidly developed in industrial, municipal and wastewater reuse applications where parameters may change rapidly. Lewabrane HP membrane elements ensure high retention of important element ions even under conditions of temperature and pH changes. Different types of elements are considered important elements in different applications. Silicon is an important element in boiler feed water, while important elements in wastewater applications are nitrates or organics.

Dr Lipnizki said: "In many industries, high salt rejection combined with high energy efficiency is very useful, especially when combined with other separation processes such as ion exchange in the design of reverse osmosis processes. The advantages are lower operating pressure and higher rejection , Which makes the cycle time of the ion exchange device longer. "

Therefore, typical applications are combined processes such as boiler feedwater production for power generation, Zero Liquid Discharge Process (ZLD) or ultrapure water production. However, the product can also be used in innovative processes such as closed circuit reverse osmosis (CCRO), where the feedwater composition changes with each cycle, and continuous retention is an important advantage of the new Lewabrane HP products.

According to reports, the engineering tool LewaPlus developed by LANXESS helps to design water treatment facilities easily and reliably. The software can be used to design ion exchange and reverse osmosis membrane devices and combined systems respectively. The latest version 2.0.9 software has included the newly developed Lewabrane HP series products.
