Life Biobcompo project develops low-density cellulose fiber biocomposites for the automotive sector

Bio-composite cellulose fiber extracted from the forest has been selected as the raw material for the development of lightweight bio-composites for the Life Biobcompo project.

The Life Biobcompo project aims to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of automobiles by 8% by replacing traditional mineral fillers with biofibers, promote the use of more sustainable resources, and demonstrate these technologies on an industrial scale.

Biocomposites require good thermomechanical properties, high aesthetic value, and good dimensional stability. SAPA's experience in the development of low-density biocomposites for automobiles in a previous R & D project is the basis for achieving the above requirements.

The project aims to have a positive impact on the quality of auto parts by developing lightweight biocomposites to replace traditional materials in auto parts, thereby reducing the total weight of the car and significantly reducing the impact of the total carbon footprint on emissions.

Commenting on this decision, the relevant person in charge said: “Biomaterials and biochemicals are part of Sappi ’s strategy to obtain maximum value from wood fibers (natural and renewable resources). We have moved from this new business area An important step has been taken to create meaningful income. "

Relevant personnel said, "I believe that the use of lighter, new materials from renewable resources and the use of ecological design, that is, designing a car that considers the environment from production to use and final disposal, should represent that we must The development model pursued. "

The staff explained: "A perfect solution that allows designing free, high-quality products, while having low odor and low emissions and high sustainability characteristics. Through tactile feedback, the balance of hardness and light weight provides first-class Composite materials suitable for new low-emission challenges in the automotive sector. "
