On February 18, 2003, the 8th Intergovernmental Negotiation Meeting of ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) was held in St. Petersburg, Russia. At the meeting, China announced that it would join the ITER program as a fully independent member. The ITER program is another major international scientific engineering program second only to the International Space Station in the world. It is currently one of the largest and most influential international scientific research cooperation projects in the world.

According to the plan, ITER plans to use NbTi and Nb3Sn superconducting wires to manufacture superconducting magnets, but China did not have the production capacity of these two superconducting wires at that time. This technical task was handed over to XAXB.

XAXB was committed to R&D and production of niobium-titanium alloys. Niobium-titanium alloy is the most demanding kind of titanium alloy. During the production process, a wire with a length of 30,000 meters and a diameter of only 1/10 of the hair can not be broken.

Ten days after the eighth ITER intergovernmental negotiation meeting, on February 28, 2003, XAXB successfully realized the commercial production of NbTi and Nb3Sn superconducting wires planned by ITER.

Seven years later, XAXB's NbTi and Nb3Sn superconducting wires passed the comprehensive evaluation of the ITER organization. In 2012, the company began to supply ITER in batches, and the delivery of all superconducting wires has been completed.


The technological accumulation of XAXB in the ITER program has filled the technological gap of China's low-temperature superconducting materials, fully realized import substitution, and possessed the world's advanced level in many technologies.

After the ITER project, XAXB has also developed engineering production technologies such as NbTi superconducting wire conductor structure design for MRI, high dimensional accuracy processing, and high copper ratio wire inlay molding, which solves the problem of long-term performance and dimensional uniformity control, and achieves high performance Mass production of NbTi superconducting wire for MRI, breaking the international monopoly. The product has passed the verification of GE and SIEMENS, and has been supplied in batches
