LyondellBasell Industries and Covestro start circulating steam project in Maasvlakte port area

LyondellBasell Industries and its joint venture partner Covestro have launched a large investment project at their plant in the Maasvlakte port area of the Port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

This project is a circulating steam project that incorporates innovative technologies into existing production plants to convert water-based waste into energy.

The new installation will enable the existing production processes at the site to have a higher level of efficiency and sustainability, which will reduce total carbon dioxide emissions by about 140,000 metric tons per year, save 0.9 Petajoule of energy, and avoid 11 million Kilograms of salt residue are discharged into surface water. This project has made an important contribution to the Dutch government's goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

LyondellBasell Industries and Covestro will build a new bio-factory and incinerator at the plant in the Maasvlakte port area, and the production waste will be processed and converted into steam. Steam will be used as energy for the existing on-site production plant, making it a cyclic process. The project will employ approximately 71 full-time employees; the new plant will eventually provide permanent positions for 11 full-time employees. At the official launch of the project, Riande Basel, Covestro and stakeholders announced the construction plan and its key advantages.

Jean Gadbois, senior vice president of Eurasian and International Manufacturing at LyondellBasell Industries, said: "For innovative projects like circulating steam, the support of the Dutch government is key to the feasibility of the project. This project will help us achieve: The reduction in carbon dioxide emissions is equivalent to the emissions of 31,000 cars, and the annual energy savings are equivalent to the electricity consumption of 90,000 homes in Breda. This is an important step towards more sustainable production. "

Covestro Chief Technology Officer Dr. Klaus Schaefer added: "Our combined plant in the Maasvlakte port area is an important part of Covestro's production network. We have been working to reduce our emissions. With this investment we are now Some start-up efficiencies will be greatly improved. "

Allard Castelein, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, said: "This project is an important step towards achieving the Dutch goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 49% by 2030. Rotterdam's industry as a major source of emissions plays a key role in reducing emissions "The projects by Leander Basel and Covestro are an inspiring example of how this can be done in a highly competitive market."
