LyondellBasell Industries and NESTEOIL announce mass production of bio-based plastics from renewable materials

Lyondell Basel is one of the world's largest plastics, chemicals and oil refining companies. NESTEOIL is the world's largest producer of waste and residue recycled diesel. Recently, it has jointly announced the first production of bio-based polypropylene and commercial-scale biodiesel. Low density polyethylene.

The joint project uses NESTEOIL's renewable hydrocarbons from sustainable bio-based feedstocks such as used oil and residual oil. The project has successfully produced thousands of tons of bio-based plastics that have been approved for the production of food packaging and are marketed under the new series Circulen and Circulen Plus under the Ryandex Basel circular economy brand.

"Lyondell Basel has decades of innovation and this achievement demonstrates the concrete actions we take to support the circular economy," said Richard Roudeix, senior vice president of Ryander Basel Eurasia and International Olefins and Polyolefins. "By using renewable resources, we are contributing to the fight against climate change and helping our customers achieve their environmental goals."

"We are excited to enable the plastics industry to introduce more bio-based materials into our products. It is very satisfying that NESTEOIL's renewable hydrocarbons perform perfectly in commercial-scale bio-based polymer production, providing The choice of a direct alternative to fossil materials, "said Peter Vanacker, President and CEO of NESTEOIL. "This groundbreaking collaboration with Leander Basel marks a major milestone in the commercialization of NESTEOIL's renewable polymers and chemicals business, focusing on developing renewable and recycling solutions for forward-looking sustainable brands. "

This achievement is extraordinary because it combines NESTEOIL's unique renewable raw materials with Lyondell's technical capabilities. The flexibility of Leander Basel's cracker allows it to introduce new renewable raw materials at the Wesseling plant in Germany, which is directly converted into bio-based polyethylene and bio-based polypropylene. An independent third party tested polymer products with carbon tracers and confirmed that they contain more than 30% renewable ingredients.

Lyondell Basel sells some of the renewable products produced in the trial to multiple customers, one of which is Colitesco of the Melitta Group, and brands such as Toppits® and Albal®, Europe's leading supplier of household film brand products. Cofresco plans to use Circulen Plus bio-based polyethylene to make sustainable food packaging materials.
