Magna develops recyclable thermoplastic composite automotive parts

Magna, based in Troy, Michigan, USA this year introduced two thermoplastic lift doors-Jeep Cherokee 2019 and Acura RDX 2019. The company has announced that it will launch two more products in China later this year.

Magna Exteriors President Grahame Burrow said: Magna's thermoplastic lift door modules meet the growing demand for products that reduce vehicle weight, increase fuel efficiency, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, expand the range of electric vehicle batteries, and improve aerodynamics.

Magna's lift doors use long glass fiber polypropylene (LGFPP) as the interior panel and use 40% reinforced glass fiber. According to Magna, the reinforcement details are usually added to the inner panel in the form of metal (steel or aluminum), additional LGFPP pieces, glass or carbon reinforcement pads or tape, or a mixture of any of these, placed in high stress areas. The outer panel is usually talc reinforced high modulus, low linear thermal expansion coefficient (CLTE), thermoplastic olefin (TPO).
