Moi Composites uses continuous fiber thermoset composites to make MAMBO 3D printed boats

Moi Composites is an emerging 3D printing company that mainly manufactures powerful products through the use of robots and advanced composite materials.

Moi's team worked with professional partners in the automation, composites, and shipbuilding industries to use their own patented scalable 3D printing technology, namely Continuous Fiber Manufacturing (Continuous Fiber Manufacturing CFM) technology, to create an additive manufacturing technology cruise ship-MAMBO.

The unique shape of MAMBO is similar to an inverted tricycle. It is digitally processed in Moi's CFM through equipment. The equipment uses continuous fibers impregnated with thermosetting resin to produce fiber-reinforced products with mechanical properties. The characteristics meet or exceed the traditional fiberglass boats. By using the CFM process, no molds and other tools are required, thus saving time and money.

In the MAMBO process, two Italian KUKA Quantec high-precision robots were used, printed at Autodesk's advanced manufacturing plant in the UK, and then shipped to the Catmarine shipyard, where they were connected and laminated into a one-piece sandwich structure.

MAMBO is 6.5 meters long, 2.5 meters wide, has a net weight of 800 kg, and is equipped with a real navigation system and a 115-horsepower engine. Regarding the MAMBO project, Gabriele Natale, CEO and co-founder of Moi Composites, explained: “We participated in the 2017 Genoa Yacht Show. It was at this event that we proposed the idea of making MAMBO. We saw this first. The project took shape and then put it into practice. Finally, MAMBO came to sea today.

We use 3D printing boats to enhance the concept of customization through a unique design, which is tailor-made according to the ideas of the ship owner, so that everyone has the opportunity to understand and experience the ocean in their own way. Without the support of our partners, none of these things would happen, and we have no doubts about this ambitious project. "It is reported that MAMBO will make its debut at the 2020 Genoa Yacht Show in early October.
