Motherson collaborates with UBQ to use environmentally friendly thermoplastics in auto parts

Sustainability is also one of the goals of the automotive industry, so more and more environmentally friendly materials are appearing in parts.

The global automotive Tier 1 supplier Motherson Group is cooperating with Israeli clean technology company UBQ Materials. The two companies are working to apply UBQ thermoplastics with negative carbon emissions to the automotive parts produced by Motherson Group for the automotive industry.

UBQ is a patented material that is converted from unsorted 100% household waste. Such waste includes food waste, mixed plastic, paper, cardboard, packaging materials, and diapers. Unsorted waste is reduced to the most basic natural components, and then reassembled and combined together to become a kind of matrix, creating a new type of environmentally friendly material that can be used in all walks of life.

UBQ Materials first aimed at the plastics industry, and used the thermoplasticity of the material to be similar to that of the polymer, and developed several commercial-grade UBQ materials suitable for injection molding, extrusion and compression molding processes. This material can also be mixed with olefins, styrene, chlorine-based resins and additives, and its physical properties can be customized according to the requirements of the final part by using common compatibilizers in the industry. UBQ materials can be divided into two categories:

UBQ GHG (greenhouse effect) neutralizing additives: UBQ GHG neutralizing additives allow processors to directly compensate for carbon dioxide emissions from plastic polymers. In the production process, 1.9 to 3.5 kg of carbon dioxide is usually emitted per kilogram of polymer, and the UBQ GHG neutralizer can offset 15 times its weight of carbon dioxide on average.

Just add 10% of UBQ GHG material to an auto part to instantly transform it into a carbon neutral product. UBQ GHG can be added as a main batch additive to product formulations, and has different grades, compatible with olefins, styrene and chlorine-based resins.

UBQ industrial grade: As a bio-based composite thermoplastic material, UBQ industrial grade material can replace plastic polymers in hundreds of applications. This material is an excellent environmentally friendly material that can replace petroleum-based and plant-based polymers and wood. Its concentration is usually 30% to 100% of the weight of the finished product. It is highly competitive, sustainable and recyclable. .

By converting waste from landfills, UBQ can prevent methane emissions, groundwater leakage, and other environmental hazards. Every ton of UBQ material produced can prevent 11.7 tons of carbon dioxide from polluting the environment.

In February 2020, UBQ Materials began to cooperate with Daimler, the first partner in the automotive industry. Due to the good progress in research and development, UBQ Materials was introduced to Motherson, which hopes to provide sustainable solutions to help customers achieve their sustainability goals.

At present, Motherson is testing and evaluating various automotive interior and exterior parts made of UBQ materials. After further testing and inspection, Motherson and UBQ plan to achieve mass production through cooperation.
