Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. mass-produces the world’s smallest auto parts: MLCC and the world’s smallest ferrite beads

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd., a large Japanese electronic component company, is committed to the miniaturization of auto parts. Recently, it has begun mass production of the world’s smallest large-capacity chip multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and the world’s smallest Of ferrite beads. With the advancement of autonomous driving and electrification, auto parts are gradually becoming more dense, and Japanese company Murata intends to seize business opportunities in this field through miniaturization of auto parts.

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. mass-produced chip multilayer ceramic capacitors. The smallest model has a volume of only 1 mm × 0.5 mm × 0.4 mm, and can store capacitance of 1 μF (micro Farad). The volume under the same capacitance is larger than the previous one. The minimum size is reduced by about 60%. Ceramic capacitors with a size of 1.6 mm × 0.8 mm × 1.25 mm have an electrostatic capacitance of 10 μF, which is about 10 times the original. It is reported that the electrostatic capacity of these miniaturized products are equivalent to those used by ordinary vehicles.

Chip multilayer ceramic capacitors are electronic components that keep the voltage in the circuit constant or remove noise through charging and discharging. With the development of automotive electronics and automation, the use of this kind of parts continues to increase, and each passenger car needs to use about 1,000 to 5,000 chip multilayer ceramic capacitors. Calculated by the amount of shipments, Murata has a global market share of 40%, making it the world's largest manufacturer. In addition to the field of auto parts, Murata also plans to start mass production of small and large-capacity chip multilayer ceramic capacitors for smartphones in 2020. The size is the world's smallest 0.25 mm × 0.125 mm, and the capacity can be increased by 10 times.

Ferrite beads are electronic components that convert the noise in the circuit into heat and remove it, so that the current in the circuit remains stable. Murata has developed and mass-produced the world's smallest ferrite beads measuring 1.6 mm × 0.8 mm. Compared with the previous minimum size of 2.0 mm × 1.25 mm, this time through adjustment of the internal structure, the miniaturization has been successfully achieved. It is reported that the miniaturization of magnetic beads can reduce the dedicated area on the substrate by 50%.
