PolyOne’s new BERGAMID polyamide improves the welding strength and aesthetics of laser welded parts

On May 7, 2020, PolyOne launched a new formulation of Bergamid ™ laser weldable material in Asia, which can be used in automotive parts, consumer products and medical equipment. This new addition to Bergamid ’s product portfolio has controllable laser transmittance, multiple color options, and custom performance options, allowing manufacturers to produce high-performance parts with durable welding characteristics and smooth surfaces.

The polymer used for laser welding must allow at least 20% laser energy transmission. In addition, the laser absorption can be controlled by adjusting the type of pigment. PolyOne offers a series of ready-made and tailor-made solutions to meet the required laser transmission rate in various markets. The new material solution is only available in Asia, formulated with PA66, and has reliable laser weldability. A variety of resins can also be used to customize formulations to meet specific customer needs.

"Laser welding is technologically advanced, and its success depends on the weldability, transmission rate, softening point, absorber and color compatibility of the materials used," said Xu Tao, general manager of special engineering materials for PolyOne in Asia . "Our new Bergamid grade has a high welding strength and a smooth surface, providing unparalleled finished products."

To support manufacturers in using their new materials, PolyOne also provides a range of value-added services, including part design, material compatibility evaluation, and laser welding process selection.
