Putting anticorrosive coats on marine installations: tall towers, ships, bridges

Whether it is a sea ship, a sea-crossing bridge, or a satellite or space station in high suspension space, it is extremely easy to be corroded. For any industrial material, corrosion is a quiet spoiler-China's total annual cost of corrosion is more than two trillion yuan.

Wang Liping is this man who fights against corrosion. From a weak crown to a stand-up this year, he is almost not confused. He overcomes difficulties in the field of "anti-corrosion" and puts on anti-corrosion coats for towers, ships and bridges.

Fighting for Marine Corrosion

In order to set up the Key Laboratory of Marine New Materials and Applied Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in August 2015, Wang Liping and his family set off from Lanzhou, a northwestern town that is dry and dry, and drove to the humid and humid coastal city of Ningbo.

2400 kilometers away, 3 days, Wang Liping along the way has mixed tastes. In the previous 10 years, Wang Liping has been engaged in the research of space anti-wear and lubricating film materials and their aerospace applications. At that time, however, he had to shoulder the burden of new marine materials and application research, and the challenge can be imagined.

He is about to arrive in Ningbo, where "the intersection of the three rivers and the five continents", the sea breeze conveys the spiritual show and fashion of the southern city. It also has an unusual appeal for those who study corrosion and protective materials, and has unique scientific research conditions. This is the most realistic experimental place, and there are high-tech industries in protective materials incubating here.

After that, based on nearly all marine materials or marine equipment research institutes in 2016, the research footprint of Wang Liping and his team began along the coastal trials in the Yellow Sea, East China Sea, South China Sea, Hainan Wenchang, and Xisha Yongxing in 2017. Stations and test bases continue to expand.

He remembered that their research equipment had been baptized in countless storms on the small island of Xisha surrounded by the sea. At noon in July, the temperature of Xisha Island was as high as more than 50 degrees Celsius, and the surface temperature of the steel structure of the equipment was as high as more than 80 degrees Celsius. The team members are facing such a scorching sun, installing and maintaining various test equipment and equipment. Dark skin and blisters on hands are the greatest value of the team's scientific dedication and exploration of truth.

The team's efforts for more than two years have also received feedback. They have overcome the technical problems of how to extend the life of the equipment in the marine environment, successfully developed one functional protective coating system after another, and the results have been continuously recognized by the peers and the market.

Taking Zhoushan Base's 380-meter tallest transmission tower in the world as an example, the transmission tower is facing high salinity, high humidity and high temperature from the tropical marine environment. Wang Liping's team developed a new graphene-modified heavy-duty anticorrosive coating with independent intellectual property rights, which was successfully applied to this tower, making it resistant to salt fog for more than 6000 hours and increasing the protection life by about 3 times, which is at the international leading level. This is equivalent to putting a coat on the transmission tower in the stormy sea. At present, this achievement has been industrialized, and oil storage tanks, power distribution network facilities, bridge projects, ships, and South China Sea marine facilities have also put on this coat.

Let the team play a huge synergy

As a post-80s young scientist, Wang Liping grew up much faster than his peers. "These honors are not my own, but the affirmation of the team." Wang Liping always emphasized the strength of the team. He kept telling reporters that the report should be as simple as possible, and there is no need to highlight it. Wang Liping said that the relationship in the team is not an executive order relationship. You cannot rely on the identity of the project leader to direct others in the laboratory to do anything. Everyone in the team is an equal cooperative relationship.

For the team, Wang Liping has his own wisdom: some people are nervous when they come to power, and they can't say a word, but he can take students to do experiments in the laboratory every day, very seriously; some people do n’t like to write articles, nor do they Willing to stay in the lab, but he can go to the factory to solve practical problems. These people, Wang Liping have worked hard to absorb into their team.

"I only look at the strongest strengths of a person, and don't pay too much attention to the shortcomings. If he is the most serious and strong in some aspect, then I must introduce him to my team." Wang Liping does not require students or teachers to send much Articles, how many patents are filed. There are two points for the assessment criteria he established: one is to clarify the principle, and the other is to solve practical problems. Dadaozhijian, such an evaluation system made the entire team devote themselves to scientific research, and is committed to solving every problem.

Wang Liping has presided over and completed 20 important projects including the National Key Research and Development Plan, the Ministry of Science and Technology 973 Project, the 863 Project, the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Defense Key Project. Attracted multidisciplinary members from Japan and the United States.

"This is the best age for scientific research"

When a media interviewed Wang Liping, he said that he did not need to deliberately publicize the hardships of scientific research. Scientific research is a profession he likes, and it is not much different from any other profession. "Scientists are often portrayed as such an image, giving up all the rest time, soaking in the laboratory every day, all day long, and even giving up the time to reunite with their wives and children. I don't agree."

"The times are developing and progressing. This is the best era for scientific research. The state provides a lot of financial support. The society respects and recognizes scientific researchers. Many news reports and public opinion have paid much attention to scientific researchers." Wang Liping Lamented.

For young people who are or are preparing to engage in scientific research, Wang Liping advises to keep learning, "My teacher is almost 80 years old and he is still studying." Wang Liping studied for more than 10 years with Academician Xue Qunji. In 2013, Academician Xue Qunji transformed into a new marine material in the ancient years. He came to the office every day. When he was fine, he looked for information on the Internet. He did n’t know many formulas. He would ask his students, even students. "You also need to learn to persist, no matter how bad the environment is, don't complain; it is also important to know how to be grateful. If a person is excellent, he is also very good in all aspects.

Speaking of future plans, Wang Liping said: "I hope to further provide important theoretical and technical support for China's marine engineering construction, marine resource development, maritime security protection, and sustainable development of the marine economy."
