Robert Bosch develops new sensors for flying cars

Bosch has developed a new sensor mass production method that maximizes energy efficiency and is equipped with components with advanced computing capabilities.

In today's society, urban mobility solutions are becoming more diverse. There are bicycles, cars, trains, trams, and more. In the future, new ways such as driverless mobility will be added. In addition, there are many new flight options to choose from, such as self-driving flying cars or using drones to achieve time-critical freight or drug delivery services.

All of these applications require powerful sensors and control systems to support them in order to achieve energy savings as much as possible. As a result, Bosch and other companies and institutions have jointly established the OCEAN12 public research project. This project cooperates in the pan-European region and invites 27 partners to cover a wide range of fields from semiconductors, electrical, aerospace to automotive technology.

It is reported that the OCEAN12 project is mainly an innovative sensor production method, adding ultra-thin barriers to the insulator, thereby reducing current leakage, reducing energy consumption and increasing computing speed. Based on this technology, partners of the OCEAN12 project alliance later developed new accessories.

According to Bosch, the OCEAN12 project will ensure that the new sensor system is applied to the future mobile travel concept. Compared with the current level, the future energy consumption will be reduced by more than 90%. In addition, the new technology also helps reduce the size of the sensor system and integrates high-performance evaluation circuits on the system-on-a-chip. For autonomous driving and flying cars, energy-efficient sensor systems are indispensable and important components.

The OCEAN12 project fund is provided by the European Union and related national institutions. The current market value is about 104 million euros (about RMB 810 million). During the project promotion period from 2018 to 2021, all sponsors invested nearly 48 million euros (about RMB 3.74 In addition to the above-mentioned Bosch, members of the Enterprise Alliance also include Airbus, Audi, Grofont Semiconductor, and many small and medium-sized enterprises, research institutions and universities.
