Roehm launches PMMA PLEXIGLAS® OPTICAL HT, which combines excellent heat resistance and optical properties

ROHM launched the new PMMA PLEXIGLAS® Optical HT with higher long-term use temperature, providing a new durable material for the automotive and lighting industries

· The new material combines a higher heat distortion temperature and excellent optical performance, giving product designers greater creative flexibility

· The long-term working temperature of this material can reach 105°C, and it has obtained UL RTI certification

ROHM`s molding compound business unit has launched a new high-temperature-resistant special molding compound-PLEXIGLAS® Optical HT, which can maintain excellent optical performance even at higher long-term operating temperatures.

As a member of the Rohm polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) molding compound product portfolio, the performance of PLEXIGLAS® Optical HT is very balanced: its optical efficiency has reached the first-class level of PLEXIGLAS® 8N, but it is thermally deformed The temperature is higher, close to the PLEXIGLAS® Heatresist product series; in addition, it has inherited the excellent aging resistance and durability of PLEXIGLAS®.

This new type of special molding compound provides designers of automotive headlights and lighting components with more creative space, which can help create a distinctive and unique appearance.

The long-term working temperature of PLEXIGLAS® Optical HT is 15°C higher than the standard

The optical components used in automobile headlights, high-power floodlights and street lights usually have higher requirements for materials. However, new product design trends, such as the use of high-performance LED lights while reducing the size of components, have further increased the thermal performance requirements of materials.

However, increasing the heat distortion temperature often means sacrificing even the smallest optical performance. The advent of PLEXIGLAS® Optical HT has solved this problem, making it no longer impossible to have both higher heat distortion temperature and excellent optical performance.

René Kogler, Head of Product Management for Lamps, Extrusions and Optical Devices of ROHM, said: “The launch of PLEXIGLAS® Optical HT is to meet the market’s demand for optical components with higher heat distortion temperatures and provide greater Flexibility. Compared with the current standard, its long-term working temperature has been increased by 15°C, but the transparency and light transmittance are not affected at all. This opens a new door for lamp design. At the same time, it also inherits PLEXIGLAS® Other characteristics of the company, such as UV resistance, aging resistance, recyclability, etc., are completely trustworthy by customers."

PLEXIGLAS® Optical HT, designed for high-performance LED applications

PLEXIGLAS® Optical HT can be processed by a variety of standard thermoplastic processes, and its excellent flow properties are comparable to those of basic molding compounds, and can be used to produce complex optical components.

Dr. Rüdiger Carloff, Project Manager of the Rohm Methacrylate Innovation Management Department, emphasized: “PLEXIGLAS® Optical HT is specially designed for high-performance LED applications and can withstand temperatures up to 105°C. This has been established by RTI The rating is certified according to UL 746B standard. At the same time, it is also an ideal choice for light pipes with long optical paths."

Sivakumara Krishnamoorthy, senior product manager for the automotive industry in ROHM’s molding compound business unit, said: “PLEXIGLAS® Optical HT has great application potential in the automotive industry because the long light pipes and other optical components of automotive headlights need to withstand high The thermal stress is very demanding on materials. We believe that PLEXIGLAS® Optical HT will provide them with an excellent material solution."

PLEXIGLAS® OPTICAL HT

PLEXIGLAS® Optical HT is an amorphous, thermoplastic molding compound for use in all applications where a crystal clear, weathering stable acrylic material is required.
