ROMIRA GmbH’s Romiloy / Rotec and Luranyl compounds and ASA / PC specialty compounds stand out in automotive weathering applications

The growing demand for design, economics, and increasingly important ecological aspects in the automotive market poses challenges for automakers to continuously optimize specific properties and develop new materials. Cheap polymer blends play an important role in this regard.

For example, a requirement from automakers is that after injection molding, no complicated and expensive subsequent operations are required to affect the performance of the part. And polymer blends can meet a variety of requirements of automotive manufacturers due to their wide range of properties. By mixing the various polymers and additives in the polymer to form a special compound, the required specifications can be achieved.

German company Romila has become an expert in this field. The company is able to develop many Romiloy / Rotec and Luranyl compounds to achieve the required application performance. This also includes a new generation of acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate / polycarbonate (ASA / PC) special compounds, such as matte Romiloy EXP2712, high-gloss Romiloy 6065 and Romiloy 6070.

Romiloy ASA / PC compounds are reported to have excellent impact strength and thermal stability similar to PC / ABS compounds. However, when the ASA component is used with special additives, it has excellent resistance to ultraviolet corrosion and weather resistance. As a result, these Romiloy materials are suitable not only for indoor applications, but also for outdoor applications.

According to the weather resistance, it is first determined that various compounds are used in the corresponding areas of the upper, middle and lower parts of the vehicle: especially the materials used in the upper and middle vehicle areas must exhibit excellent weather resistance. In accelerated aging tests, Romiloy EXP2712, Romiloy 6065, and Romiloy 6070 materials are exposed to Florida and Kalahari climate conditions for one and two-year cycles, while DIN EN 20105-A02 gray scale assessments are as high as 4/5 to 5. This makes these materials an excellent choice for surface treatment applications such as unfinished, whether in matte or high-gloss conditions. Due to their excellent impact resistance and strength, these materials can also be used in lower vehicle areas. Therefore, a new generation of Romiloy ASA / PC special compounds can be used in all three regions.
