SABIC cooperated with Elkamet Kunststofftechnik GmbH to introduce SABIC LEXAN polycarbonate (PC) resin into lighting applications

SABIC, a global leader in the chemical industry, announced a partnership with Elkamet Kunststofftechnik GmbH, a leader in the plastics processing industry. Elkamet will use SABIC LEXAN polycarbonate (PC) resin based on certified renewable raw materials in several final applications in the lighting industry.

In October 2019, SABIC launched polycarbonate based on certified renewable raw materials-an engineering thermoplastic resin as part of the company's TRUCIRCLE™ solution for certified renewable products. Polycarbonate provides SABIC and its direct and end customers with more sustainable solutions and related advantages. Studies have shown that the use of SABIC's LEXAN polycarbonate resin can potentially reduce carbon footprint by as much as 61% and reduce fossil consumption by as much as 35%.

"Our polycarbonate (PC) is based on certified renewable raw material solutions and supports the pursuit of a more circular economy. This economic approach prioritizes resource conservation and environmental sustainability. Recycling and recycling technologies enable us to Obtain the greatest value from materials that have traditionally been discarded.” SABIC’s head of circular economy, Mark Vester, said, “We are very happy to work with Elkamet. This is part of our ongoing commitment to our customers who are increasingly seeking to satisfy Sustainable solutions to consumer needs."

"Elkamet is the first in the lighting industry to provide our customers with alternative products to keep up with the more sustainable trend in the development of plastic parts." said Elkamet salesperson Lukas Platt. The diffuser/shade is one of the largest parts made of plastic in lamps. By using renewable resources for production, lighting manufacturers can have a huge impact on sustainable development. We are very happy to work with SABIC. SABIC's polycarbonate is based on certified renewable raw materials, which ensures that customers do not have to compromise between sustainability and material properties. In addition, the huge advantage of this solution is that the design and application requirements of Elkamet profiles made of SABIC materials remain unchanged. "Platt concluded.

Elkamet has also obtained ISCC certification in order to provide SABIC and Elkamet's ordinary customers with consistent proof of a sustainable supply chain.

"Since the launch of renewable PCs at the K2019 trade fair in Düsseldorf last year, various industries have shown great interest in the solution. We are very pleased that Elkamet can enter the market. SABIC's engineering thermoplastics Director Lennard Markestein said: "This is another step in the common direction of the value chain to achieve a more responsible value chain that has a positive impact on environmental challenges. "

SABIC's TRUCIRCLE product portfolio and recycling solution services cover: recyclability design, mechanical recycling products, waste plastic raw materials recycling certified recycling products and bio-based raw materials certified renewable energy products.
