SABIC helps Diab achieve a 50% reduction in PET core cell size

On February 5th, SABIC announced that the company’s new products created by nanotechnology have been officially selected by the world’s leading structural core material manufacturer Diab Group as the raw material for the production of Divinycell PY PET foam core materials, helping to reduce weight and improve mechanical performance. the goal.

This LNP™ COLORCOMP™ product has a unique process formula, which can significantly improve the nucleation process, increase foaming efficiency, and achieve a variety of foam densities. Compared with the traditional nucleating agent represented by talcum powder, it can maintain the original density while reducing the cell size to a minimum of 50%, improving the uniform distribution of cells, and reducing the foam absorption during the composite molding process. The amount of resin reduces the weight of fan blades and creates conditions for the production of longer blades.

The substantial reduction in cell size also eliminates the need for secondary foam molding and surface treatment processes that were originally used to close cells and reduce resin absorption. In addition, smaller and more uniform cells can also greatly improve the shear strength/strain performance of the core material, making it reach a height that cannot be achieved by traditional processes or low-density core materials.

"For the wind power market, PET foam core material is still a relatively new thing. But we believe that as a thermoplastic material, it will certainly have broad application prospects." Magdalena Sandström, Chief Technology Officer of Diab Group said, " Saudi Basic Industries’ innovative LNP™ COLORCOMP™ product can significantly improve the cell nucleation process. We will use this to develop a new PET foam core material to promote wind turbine blades towards a larger and stronger goal."

“The cooperation between SABIC and Diab Group has opened up new opportunities in the wind power market.” said Luc Govaerts, Director of Specialty Chemical Formulation and Application R&D at SABIC. “With advanced nanotechnology, we have created LNP™ COLORCOMP™ products. It will help Dai Platinum Group provides end customers with lighter, stronger, recyclable composite core products, and promotes the sustainable development of the world's energy sector."

SABIC said that in addition to the wind power market, LNP™ COLORCOMP™ products will also play an important role in shipping, construction and other fields.
