SABIC launches Noryl GTX 9500 resin with the potential of carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites

Recently, the global chemical industry leader SABIC launched Noryl GTX 9500 resin, which is a new product of the unfilled Noryl GTX resin series, which has excellent dimensional stability under high temperature and humidity conditions.

Compared with polyamide (PA) resins (PA66 and PA6), SABIC's Noryl GTX 9500 resin can maintain a better balance of mechanical properties in the typical high temperature and humidity environment exposed to the hood of a car, and has a comparable high Fluidity and high temperature performance. Under a wider range of temperature and humidity conditions, its dimensional stability and mechanical performance retention-coupled with high flow properties-can provide opportunities for thin-walled designs that reduce weight.

Target applications of Noryl GTX 9500 resin include automotive junction boxes, connectors and other applications that require dimensional stability. These materials also demonstrated their potential as the base resin for carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites. Carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites can be used in structural and body parts, as well as applications in the industrial, aerospace, and marine markets.

Relevant personnel said: "Our global development team is good at formulating thermoplastics with targeted properties to solve long-standing challenges faced by customers, such as the softening tendency of nylon when exposed to moisture."

The relevant person added: "We designed Noryl GTX 9500 resin to provide our customers with innovative new material choices to meet those applications that must maintain their shape and performance in high temperature and humid environments. The introduction of this new grade shows Our leadership in material innovation and our focus on continuous improvement and expansion of our product portfolio."

Withstand the test of heat and humidity

PA resin has a strong tendency to absorb moisture and water. This tendency is more serious when the temperature rises, which may cause softening, decrease in hardness and warpage. The water absorption and moisture absorption of Noryl GTX 9500 resin are significantly lower than that of PA, even under high temperature conditions as high as 150 degrees Celsius. In fact, SABIC's test shows that the moisture absorption of Noryl GTX 9500 resin in equilibrium is 21% less than PA66 and 58% less than PA6.

In the equilibrium state of moisture absorption, Noryl GTX 9500 material surpasses PA in terms of dimensional stability. The total dimensional change (flow direction and cross flow direction) of Noryl GTX 9500 resin in equilibrium is 0.29%, while the total change of PA66 is 84%, and the total change of PA6 is 165% higher than that of Noryl GTX 9500 resin. This improved dimensional stability provides benefits for humidity-sensitive applications, including reduced warpage to reduce scrap rates, and thinner walls, which supports lightweight designs.

Compared with PA66 and PA6, Noryl GTX 9500 resin also shows excellent mechanical properties under wet conditions-flexural modulus, tensile modulus and flexural strength. In addition, this material exceeds the existing PA-based Noryl GTX grades in terms of water and moisture absorption, dimensional stability, and performance retention.
