SGL Carbon and Solvay collaborate to develop large tow carbon fiber composites for aviation structures

Special chemical giant Solvay (Brussels, Belgium) and carbon fiber manufacturer SGL Carbon (Wiesbaden, Germany) reported on December 3 that they have reached a joint development agreement (JDA) to A batch of medium modulus (IM) carbon fiber composite materials based on large tows was introduced to the market. These materials will be based on SGL Carbon's large tow carbon fiber and Solvay's main structural resin system, helping to meet the need to reduce costs and carbon dioxide emissions, and improve the production process and fuel efficiency of the next generation of commercial aircraft.

The agreement includes thermosetting and thermoplastic composite technologies. It is based on Solvay's position as a supplier of advanced materials in the aerospace industry and SGL Carbon's expertise in high-volume carbon fiber manufacturing.

"For Solvay, this is an opportunity to lead the aviation industry to adopt composite materials based on 50k medium modulus carbon fiber. This is a very competitive value proposition that can bring more affordable high performance to our customers Solution. We see this as the first step in a long-term partnership, "said Augusto Di Donfrancesco, a member of the Solvay Executive Committee.

"By combining SGL's carbon fiber expertise in our newly developed unique 50k medium modulus fiber with Solvay's resin formulation and expertise in the aerospace market, the goal of the partnership is to develop advanced aerospace material systems The alliance supports our strategic direction and accelerates our development in the attractive aerospace market. "Said Dr. Michael Maggerus, spokesman for the management committee of SGL Carbon.

Composite materials for aerospace applications represent a multi-billion dollar market and are expected to grow strongly in the next decade. Solvay and SGL Carbon are uniquely positioned to develop solutions to meet market demand.
