Sharp plans to divest display business to focus on micro LED

On October 21, according to foreign media reports, Sharp, which Hon Hai acquired in 2016, plans to spin off its display business unit and establish a new company to focus on microLED display technology.

According to foreign media reports, after the divestiture of the display business, Sharp will establish a new company called Sharp Display Technology (SDTC).

SDTC, a new company established after the spin-off, will take over Sharp’s current LCD panel factory and OLED R&D line, but they will focus on microLED technology.

The headquarters of the newly established SDTC will be located in Sharp’s office in Kamayama. Foreign media reported that Taimi Oketani has been appointed as the chairman of the new company, and Hon Hai will also appoint two important executives.

Foreign media said in the report that by spinning off the display business to establish a new company SDTC, Sharp plans to raise more external funds for the research and development of microLED technology to support them in competing with Samsung, Sony and other companies in the next generation of display technology.

In terms of research and development of microLED technology, foreign media said that SDTC will use the Hakusan factory in Ishikawa Prefecture, which was acquired by Sharp from Japan Display Corporation (JDI) last year.
